Marauder meandering
« on: August 23, 2016, 03:50:03 PM »
I've decided it is easier to buy a nicely modded Marauder than to freak out my neighbors shooting my 22 in my backyard. Where I live it's legal but it's not smart nor neighborly.

I need something to plink around and plug varmints up to and including some very evil raccoons. Man, they are destructive and nasty.

If you were to hot rod a .25 Marauder what would you do? I'm thinking a WAR gen 2 SSG w/hammer, WAR HE valve, WAR moderator...I'm looking for more power, more shots, better accuracy...well, who isn't?

Maybe add an alternate air supply? Like a bottle?

What else? What about a regulator? And if so, which one?

I'm going to put an ATN X-sight ii on it...

My take, others may differer.

The Marauder is a $500+ gun. Yes, you can shop around and get one cheaper, but you still have to pay freight. A decent LDC, the SSG, valve, etc. adds another $500 at least. Assuming you do the work yourself, you might expect to add another $100 or so for things you forgot. If someone else does the work, the cost will nearly double.

Now, for the record... I did buy a modified Marauder for about the same cost as buying the aforementioned parts. But, if I had it to do all over again, I probably would have waited for the Flex from WAR (≈$1,900 plus shipping). While the design is similar to the Marauder (it uses the same magazines), it is somewhat quieter. This latter reason is why I'm adding a custom-made LDC to my Marauder, just to get a few dB less muzzle blast.

As for the X-Sight... I poured over the decision to order one for well over 2 months. I finally ordered a 5x20 which will be here tomorrow. This reason I mention this is, it appears that the scope is somewhat easier to mount on the Flex, than it is the Marauder. That issue remains to be seen, but I will know tomorrow.

I don't mind spending a grand on a gun...likely as not it will be Travis selling/building it for me. I know you can hot rod something to death and quickly exceed the value of it...been there, done that and will likely do it again. it's part of the fun, no? Also, buying the gun, parts and labor from the same source should make it cost less overall...at least I hope so.

I'm up in the air...so to speak...about regulators. I'm from the world of paintball and can't get the idea out of my head that an air powered anything should have a regulator on it...I mean if a reg is a good thing and one of the things that marginalizes it is that it takes up valuable air space...then add air space.

The x-sight I'm getting is the 3-14. Availability and a high discount off of MSRP forced my hand. I'll not shoot more than 50 yards or so anyway. If I understand how it zooms...it's not an optical zoom and higher power may not be your friend.

Now that I have an airgun with a regulator, I too wouldn't have another airgun with out one.

Yes, you're correct about the ATN X-Sight II. Focused at 100 yards, on full power (20x), the display is a bit pixelated. However, your best aim scenario is never full power. At 10 power (where I like to shoot), the display appears good enough to see rabbit-sized targets clearly. At 50 yards, you could hit a rat in the eye!

I'll know a lot more in a few days, as mine arrives today.
