Ironically it makes me hopeful that we can unite as a 'planet' one day and celebrate in these achievements. As time goes on and we make unbelievable discoveries about our universe, the reality of how small and insignificant we are in the vastness of the cosmos is humbling. It's my hope that we can survive long enough as a species (without blowing ourselves up, killing ourselves with a lab-made concoction, poisoning our environment, or some other imbecilic thing that we think can 'never' happen) to have the ability to view our world as more than just borders, fences, flags, politicians, and races.
We have come so far as a species in such a short amount of geological time; so much power and so little understanding of how to wield it. Our science has surpassed our instincts. We send rovers to unimaginable distances to send back images of our solar system, but we still kill each with impunity though war, hunger, disease, and otherwise primitive and avoidable impulses.
Hopefully we will figure out how to behave and be able to expound on these incredible discoveries before we screw the pooch and it's all for naught.
