I don't understand....
« on: March 21, 2020, 09:44:06 AM »
what people are thinking.... The Florida beaches look like the perfect breeding ground for COVID-19....

I watched a TV interview of a young college student being asked about the virus.... His response was "If I get corona, I get corona.... it's not going to stop me from partying during Spring Break"....  :o

I wonder if he will have such a glib answer for his parents if he takes it home and his grandparents die as a result?....  ::)

The USA is already past 20,000 cases, and the trajectory is near-vertical.... yesterday saw the number of cases roughly double in one day....

Please, my friends.... Self-isolate for 14 days if you are sick.... Wash your hands.... Stay at least 6 ft. from anyone else.... Don't gather in groups of more than 10 people.... Stay home except for essential reasons.... and for non-essential businesses, please close to protect yourself, your family, your elders, and everyone in society.... If we don't "flatten the curve", it will surely flatten US....  >:(

Florida should have never allowed this to happen.  They could have stopped it by closing  the beaches.

They wanted the spring break $$, which is terrible putting money first.

It all boils down to money that the governor in Florida didn’t shut it down. Massive profit is made off spring break.

The kids who still show up to spring break obviously have their heads up their posteriors.

It has not helped the Feds have sent out mixed and confusing messages, and untruths from the get go.  I hear we should not politicize the virus but when the very top politicians politicize it then too late. From now on we should have professional pandemic experts in charge and the President butts the hell out.  When our leaders say it’s not as bad as the flu, or that everyone should wash hands and go to work, we have a problem.

What a bizarre and fubar situation we are in.

I want someone to answer this question for me: In 2008, about 68,000 American's died of the H1N1 virus (which is related to the Covid-19 variety). Why wasn't that virus era called a pandemic?

Locally they could of decided to close the beaches,  but the economy would have taken a major hit, thus they didn't.

The CDC lists the following previous pandemics since 1900....

1918-1920 Flu (H1N1) - 50 million deaths worldwide (675,000 US)
1957-1958 Flu (H2N2) - 1.1 million deaths worldwide (116,000 US)
1968-1969 Flu (H2N3) - 1 million deaths worldwide (100,000 US)
2009 Flu (H1N1 variant) ~ 575,000 deaths worldwide (80% under 65 yo, continues as a seasonal flu, with annual deaths)

Here is the current status in the USA....  https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/

But Bob? Why wasn't the H1N1 considered a pandemic?

I want someone to answer this question for me: In 2008, about 68,000 American's died of the H1N1 virus (which is related to the Covid-19 variety). Why wasn't that virus era called a pandemic?

My understanding is that this virus is unique. It jumped from animal to human quickly, and then from human to human very quickly. It is mutating. The potential damage to lungs is extreme and even if you survive the virus you might end up with permanent lung damage to the point of limiting your physical activities, forever. They have no vaccine and no cure. Left unchecked the virus will continue to pass to more victims exponentially. Those with compromised immune systems, the elderly, those with asthma, heart disease, diabetes, and other ailments have a much greater chance of not surviving. This is a new disease and they are still learning.

Wash your hands, stay home.

If nothing is done and we continue to gather, many more will die. Hospitals are are overwhelmed and medical supplies are in short supply.

When we actually had a pandemic team we got earlier warnings and the CDC acted much faster. We however don’t, and we are behind and it will get worse before it gets better, in spite of what the White House says. Not political, just reality.

Did we shut the nation down during H1N1? I don’t recall it if we did.

Nope, but that was a flu, with a much lower infection rate, and a mortality rate of well under 1%.... This is a type of SARS, and that had a mortality rate of 14-15% (over 50% for those over 64)....  :o …. Here is the source of that statistic....

The SARS epidemic was in 2003. The H1N1 was in 2008/2009 season. Here is the data:

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/2009-h1n1-pandemic.html

The H1N1 wasn't officially (fed) labeled a pandemic, except by the CDC.

I do not want to get political about how the Covid-19 virus came about, but before this all settles down, we're going to know even if the media does its best to squelch it.
