Sperian SCBA Fireman Tank Valve Threads Non Standard
« on: April 27, 2019, 12:02:40 PM »
Does anyone know if Sperian SCBA Fireman Tank Valve Threads are Non Standard?

I’m talking about the threads where you’d install a fill adapter. From what I can find there are:

CGA347 For High Pressure - 4500psi

CGA346 for lower pressure -3000 psi

There are metric tank fittings.

I have read that the 4500 psi valves typically use the CGA347 size which supposedly have 7/8" x 14 UNF threads, but there are oddball sizes maybe.

I bought a used fireman’s tank on eBay, got it hydro’d and ordered a fill adapter.

Only thing is the fill adapter only threads on a couple turns before binding.

People who sold tank are of no help, fill adapter people are no help.

I should have just bought another new AirHog. Trying to save a buck almost always bites me in the ass. Remember these words. (Banks head)

Will the fill adapter screw on to a different tank?  Regards, Tom

Well, I don’t have another tank that has this kind of valve.

Of course no one is working over the weekend. Bah.

Update - I have gotten a bunch of advice from Stikman.com folks, and Airhog.com folks.  Consensus is I have an odd ball valve or a screwy paintball adapter. I'm convinced I need to just bite the bullet and buy a Jubilee Valve and PaintBall adapter and be done.

Beware buying stuff from Ebay that even though ships from a USA warehouse, is really a Chinese company that does not want to honor their claimed refund policy. They will offer a $10 refund and let you keep the item. When you say no, they will counter with $20, and this will drag on for days or weeks. I've now been bitten twice by this. Yep, I'm a bonehead.

UPDATE: The problem was the Chinese Airgun/Paintball Fill adapter. The threads are incorrect, and the fire extinguisher guy says the probe doesn't look right to him either.

This morning I took the tank with valve, and Chinese Paintball fill adapter to the Fire Extinguisher place, and had them show me a standard CGA347 fitting thread perfectly on the valve.

Then right in front of me, the fellow took a thread chaser and worked on cleaning up the threads on my tanks valve, and destroy it. It somehow got all wonky and took out the first two or three threads.  :o >:( :( :'(

Good Grief this used fireman's tank has been jinxed. I know could have taken my time and money and bought a new tank and come out ahead.  Bonk Head multiple times.

I've ordered a new valve and paintball adapter from Airhog.

Bonk head again for good measure.

I would have charged them for the mistake!

Reminds me of way back when... I took a brand new Volvo head into a well-known machine shop in Denver, to have it "slightly" modified so it would fit a Ford block. They "fixed" the wrong bolt hole, and ruined an $1,100 DOHC head. They said they were sorry, but "I" should be responsible for not pointing out the correct hole. It was their data which was being used! After much machinations involvoing involving my lawyer, they coughed up an new one, properly drilled. And... Even provided a 3 angle volvo valve job, all for free. I guess I should have had them install it too!

I have an Omega compressor. If you're a fellow Guild member, and you pass through Roswell, NM, I'll fill your portable tank as a courtesy.
