Weight of field target pellets
« on: December 04, 2018, 04:58:02 AM »
I have a Benjamin Marauder in .177 I intend in shooting for Field Target.  What weight of
pellets is recommended?   The pellets in the 8 gr. range would have less of an arc than
the 10.5 gr. pellets, or are even heavier pellets better?  I have never shot in a field target
match, maybe the rules limit pellet weight.

It is all about the BC—Ballistic Coefficient. The lighter pellets are faster, but loose velocity faster than heavier ones.

Subject i know MUCH of ...
If you going after "HUNTER" class where we have a 20 ft lb limit your ABSOLUTELY wanting to start with the mid 10 grain pellets be it H&N 10.65 or JSB / AA 10.3 or Crosman 10.5 and shoot them 880-900 fps range.
Once you get some actual FT shooting under your belt, fine tune your scope & ranging technique especially at the 40+ yards distances .... you may do better yet going real heavy using the JSB 13.43's  8)

While trajectory gets more loopy with more weight and less speed  :P ... your wind drift become substantially less !! with the heavier weight pellets.

Having shot competitive FT for quite a few years now and trying light & fast, mid weight at modest speed & heavy being slower yet ...... I Shoot HEAVY pellets.

Thanks for your advise.  I have been working on tuning my Benjamin Marauder for 10.5 gr. pellets, but
was not sure I need the lighter pellets.  In tests I found the Crosman 10.5 gr. pellets shot the best groups,
I was surprised.  Usually I get the smallest groups with JSB pellets.
