Overkill?
« on: February 21, 2016, 05:37:09 PM »
I broke my silent pellet trap that has two layers of duct seal yesterday, while shooting the 909s. So today I thought I'd better build one suitable for big bores.

I have a bunch of old lumber and scraps laying around and so I built the new trap out of 2x4's, filled it with two bags of rubber mulch, and just about hurt myself trying to move it.  :o  I'm not exaggerating... this thing must weigh 75 lbs.

Back wall is a double layer of 2x4s, and walls and top and bottom all 2x4s. Hardware cloth keeps the rubber mulch in the box. That is easy to pull out and add a new layer of hardware cloth when it wears out. Now I need to add a clipboard hanger, and give it a go.

Nice planter! ;D
I don't use/never tried rubber mulch. But I can blow through doubled 2x's in a few shots with the .30 @ 40 yds or so. I use a steel plate (1/8 - 1/4 depending on distance) as a backer for the 2x's.

Buncha BB guns that I don't get to shoot as much as I like. Grinding out a living on the farm.

Funny, that's exactly what my wife said, "nice planter!" ::)

No way I'm blowing through the rubber mulch, though I know I'll be trying to find some self healing rubber sheets or something to hang in front of the hardware cloth.

Tried lifting this thing up to my outside bench and holy crap, just about popped a gut. I change my guess to a hundred pounds+. Ouch. Gonna get help to drag it up the hill and see if I can get it 35 - 40 yards away.

Nice planter! ;D

That's why we made Hand Trucks!  Harbor Freight has them!!

Just saying.  I use a Carrot box of Mulched Rubber.  Stops the .30 Flex!

No..dont think so.  I made one out of an old grill top and with 2 bags of mulch, (now 3) some shots have hit the metal in the back.  That may have been because more mulch was in the bottom at the time.  I used an old welcome mat and paper clips on mine.
We will see how the tuned dragon claw fares soon though!

While my new trap does not allow any pellets, or big bore lead to exit the trap, my hardware cloth barrier is not holding up very well.  Hmmm.

Wondering about buying some kevlar ballistic cloth and trying that. Want something self healing that'll last a few thousand shots before needing replacement.

According to my daughter, my personal credo should be "there's no kill like overkill."  This is a corollary to Hägar the Horrible's "learn to live with what you've got, so be sure to get enough."  Overkill is never a sin.
