New TJ's 7mm/.284 Barrel - 18" twist
« on: December 06, 2019, 04:58:42 PM »
There is a new 7mm/.284 cal barrel available from TJ's, with an 18" twist....

You can read about it on the GTA at....

https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=165806.0

This barrel should be perfect for the 96 gr. 7mm "Bowman" slug.... and get good velocity in a 28" barrel at 3000 psi....

This caliber will provide a bit better ballistics than a .308 PCP.... and more hitting power than a .257.... The new barrels are available in 1/2", 14mm, 9/16" or 11/16" OD, and there is a possibility also in 5/8"....

It was only a matter of time! Soon, 6mm, 6.5mm, and maybe 8mm. Why should the firearms guys have all of the fun??

When I rejoined the AirGun world some seven years ago,  I was fascinated by the revolution that had happened in the years after my youth of shooting a Diana .177 break barrel. .25 airguns,  Whoa! PCP’s? Another whoa! Big Bore airguns? Wow!

Then there was the reading about fellers like John Bowman showing up to LASSO events with a .257 Airgun and winning, that got me all excited. The names Quackenbush, Big Bore Bob, Haley, Bowman, Tofazfou, Nobel, Sterne, and countless others reinventing airguns on a regular basis just floors me.

I think this is the Golden Age of airguns.

If you are looking for a 15mm OD, that could be the problem.... I have never heard of him making that size.... but he should get back to you.... I know they are very busy right now.... They do have one mandrel for .177 cal, but I don't know the twist rate....

Ahhhhhhhhhh…. well in that case, it should not be a problem.... I haven't seen that list.... I see they have 2 different twist rate in .177....  8)

With some fear of steeling this thread... I remember back in the 70s, when guys were shooting experimental, really-tiny, 15 grain, .14 mm rounds, using 221 Fireball cases. As I recall, they whizzed along at 4,000+ FPS, but couldn't shoot much further than about 75 yards with any usable accuracy. I can't speak for anyone, but my two .177 airguns, have a hard time holding groups past 40 yards.

Yeah, they were .14 cal, there are actually quite a few .14 cal "Wildcats".... On the GTA we are trying to get some interest in having .142 cal barrels and slugs made.... I don't think anyone is serious enough to pony up the $$$....

For those who would like to purchase a mould from Accurate, here is one I have drawn up that should work in this 18" twist barrel....

It is a Gas Check style, no lube grooves but a midbody that just misses the lands, and all the dimensions meet Accurate's requirements.... I have contacted Tom about adding this design to his online catalogue.... I'll let you know when that happens....

If we can get a few guys to sign up for this Group Buy, I can probably light a fire under Al to run them to take advantage of the new barrels....

http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,1948.0.html

This design is a proven performer in .25 and .257 cal, and is scaled up from those designs.... I have requested that Al make the RG style moulds for this bullet, which will cast flat nose, hollowpoint, and cup point slugs all from one mould by just changing the pins (all 3 sets supplied)….

The new slug from Accurate is now in their online catalogue.... http://accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=29-096S-D.png

I notice that the diameter of the nose and drive band are both 0.286", but you can specify the diameter of your choice.... I would suggest waiting until you get your barrel and slugging it.... but if the barrel is as specified, I would probably order it at 0.285" and then size it to suit....
