Title: Hard Air Magazine - Technical Editor
Post by: rsterne on June 15, 2018, 08:09:16 PM
I have recently been asked to join the crew at Hard Air Magazine as Technical Editor.... I will be writing monthly articles, and the first is now online here....

https://hardairmagazine.com/ham-columns/airgun-technical/ham-airgun-technical-how-pcp-airguns-work/

The plan is to write my articles as a short series with a common theme or starting point.... I hope you enjoy them.... I will admit to a selfish motive, the compensation will eventually go towards purchase of a LabRadar for my retirement enjoyment....

It is always nice to be rewarded for your efforts. I can't think of anyone more deserving than you. The only problem is, it is even more work, but some of that is offset by recognition. Again, kudos!

I'm waiting for the latter... Terminal Ballistics, which has been my favorite subject for a number of years. Thanks in part, I must add, to John Schaefer, better know as Fr. Frog (https://www.frfrogspad.com).

This subject brings up a question. I wonder how the Labradar with react to nutating vs. non-nutating pellet/slug flight? I suspect you'll soon know, Bob.
Title: Re: Hard Air Magazine - Technical Editor
Post by: rsterne on October 07, 2019, 03:59:55 PM
Funny you should ask.... I have been emailing back and forth today with Ron Burnett, who has a LabRadar…. and has observed what we think is exactly that.... It looks like the "wobbling" of the pellet (in this case a 10.3 gr. JSB Exact Heavy .177 cal) significantly increases the drag.... If that isn't the answer, I don't know what is.... because launching the pellet at over Mach 0.8 (900 fps) increases the drag once below that velocity.... and launching it faster makes the situation worse.... Interestingly, the 8.4 gr. Exact shows no such tendency....  :o

I think this is a subject which needs to be explored to a much greater extent. With the grace of the Lord, you'll have a lot of time to make the subject much more enlightened! I for one, am looking forward to your research.

Oh! Can we talk about terminal ballistics one of these days??
Title: Re: Hard Air Magazine - Technical Editor
Post by: rsterne on October 07, 2019, 08:02:27 PM
My articles on Terminal Ballistics will only be theoretical (how penetration changes with velocity and SD, with non-expanding projectiles)…. plus some real world examples of wound cavities in soap from solids compared to HPs.... It will follow on after the External Ballistics portion is done....
