Cursed Teflon tape on HPA connections
« on: October 17, 2020, 10:35:43 AM »
I am going through a rash of leaky high pressure air connections. Sometimes Teflon tape works and sometimes not.

So I’m trying a different approach with Permatex 56521 High Performance Thread Sealant. Will let you know how it goes.

I'd bet you're using the wrong Teflon tape. When I say that, I mean thickness (see the list below). And... You might not be using enough, as in wraps. That is why I use the "yellow" as it is twice as thick as the white, and is easier to put on, as it were.

The gray is hard to find, but it is the only Teflon tape I'll use on stainless fittings.

White: used on NPT threads up to 3/8 inch
Yellow: used on NPT threads 1/2 inch to 2 inch, often labeled "gas tape"
Pink: used on NPT threads 1/2 inch to 2 inch, safe for potable water
Green: oil-free PTFE used on oxygen lines and some specific medical gasses
Gray: contains nickel, anti-seizing, anti-galling and anti-corrosion, used for stainless pipes
Copper: contains copper granules and is certified as a thread lubricant but not a sealer

I have an Omega compressor. If you're a fellow Guild member, and you pass through Roswell, NM, I'll fill your portable tank as a courtesy.

Thanks Alan!  This is now part of my airgun notes.  This info I was not clear on.  I have been using the Yellow on HPA fittings with success after failures with some other colors used in the past.

This is good stuff and thicker than your typical hardware store tape.

You can get it at Home Depot also.

I use green tape. I just rebuilt my shoebox and couldn't find it so I used regular tape. Hope it holds up.

I've been using the yellow tape myself for quite some time with excellent results.
