The mother of a West Palm Beach teen is suing a leading air rifle manufacturer for devastating injuries she says her son sustained when he accidentally shot himself in the head four years ago.

Since the July 2014 accident, Antonio Young has undergone several operations to remove the pellet from his head, attorney Sekou Gary said in the lawsuit filed this month in Palm Beach County Circuit Court. The suit was filed on behalf of Young’s mother, Charkata Anderson...

I am sorry the mother and the son both have to go through this, I'm sure it's no fun.

But yes, I do wonder - and I'm sure the defense will also ask - whether there was adult supervision, and whether the child had been specifically taught gun safety.  IIRC, in Illinois it would have been illegal for a child under 13 to even handle the airgun without supervision.  If their state has an age limitation like that, I'm sure defense will mention that as well.

I'm also very thankful the son wasn't handling a firearm at the time.

This reminds me of the accident (on purpose?) which happened a few years ago during a full-automatic range demonstration. Wherein a 12 year old boy was allowed to fire a Tommy gun—by himself yet! We are diminished.
