Turkey opener next Saturday
« on: March 22, 2020, 05:13:44 AM »
While Steveoh and I were planning on attending the PAE next Saturday, that of course has changed. We both new that the CA turkey opener was the same day but with a few different permissions to hunt we weren't concerned about missing the opener.

Things have of coursed morphed now and I am really looking forward to next weekend. The weather might be wet, but something tells me that might more of a 'Steelhead' problem than a 'Steveoh' problem. He has a ground blind which would keep him out of the rain, and I do not. Cross that bridge when we get there...

Due to my relocation in December I'm no longer able to shoot my Texan in the backyard. Let me rephrase...I'm physically able to because I'm on a large ranch, but I don't have permission from the landlord nor have I asked. I now live in 'open territory' vs. the 'tree grotto' I was in before so the sound carries a long ways. I also don't want to trust it in the field hunting without a brief sight-in session.  However, I did push the boundaries and set up a sight in target for the Raptor .30. I don't have perfect ranges set up so I just used a tape measure to get me to 50 yards. Besides, this is a 'hunting setup' so I'm dealing with 75 yards or closer. After some quick adjustments I had it shooting 1" at 50 yards and hole-in-hole at 30 yards.

The advantages over the .308 Texan is weight, ergonomics, and an 8 shot magazine. The disadvantages are range and the yellow metallic finish. In a perfect world I would take both with me; the Raptor for walking and the Texan for long range sniping. There will be other days for that so this weekend will be kept simple.

Kevin? Don't you own a laser rangefinder?

I have an Omega compressor. If you're a fellow Guild member, and you pass through Roswell, NM, I'll fill your portable tank as a courtesy.

Yes, Alan. However, it's been on the fritz a little and I'm loath to trust it. I've been debating whether to update it or not since it's over ten years old but I just can't justify the cost right now. Some of the digital numbers have 'missing segments' (an 8 can look like a 3, etc.) Yesterday was a spontaneous shoot since work got cancelled at the last second and I was staying at home. Honestly, a lot of my shooting/hunting equipment is still is a bit of disarray from my move too. I ran my compressor for the first time in four months to fill my tank, dug out my casting supplies, etc.

When I want to get into 'exact' distances for performance, note taking, etc. I will break out the r.f.  But sub-100 yard hunting purposes I'm totally good with 'close counts'. Having my backyard range setup for so long made a really good judge of distances from 25 to 150 yards. When using the Texan and shooting at long distances it's a necessity, but sub-100 I'm fine without it. Right now I'm at @ 1/2" high at 50 yards and about 1.5" high at 25-30 yards. With the .30 head shots are not a requirement so my target area increases exponentially over using a smaller caliber.

I’m looking forward to getting out of Dodge and isolating in nature, and hopefully getting a Gobler.

Need to sight in before we hunt. Going to shoot here at 35 yards if the neighbors aren’t out. They’ve been out everyday this past week. Cramping my style!

Will have Texan and might bring Sumatra. It smacks pretty hard.

Will sight both in this week at the 35 yards and see.

I haven't talked to owners at the new permission yet, but I'm sure we could check that out. It's literally less than a minute from my house. Maybe I'll drive down in there and see if anything's happening. Penngrove will have a lot of guys so I would stay out of there. Manor will have guys too but on the property up above. Might be good down in the hole on the backside though. Lynch is always an option but it's a small area.

I'm thinking that the best spot is Manor and down in the hole on the back side where you got that nice tom last year. If we set up similar to then with one guy on one side of the trees and one guy on the other side we could have a chill morning. I think birds will work up from the creek at daybreak. Have to go early...get there and set up by dawn.

Separate vehicles so social distancing shouldn't be an issue. I've heard your turkey calling before too so in all honesty I don't want to be within a half mile of you anyway  ;D ;D ;D

Hahaha. I’ve heard myself and don’t want to be with half a mile of me either. Hahaha

That was a great spot last year. So many Turkeys, but I’m easy.
