Handling game
« on: March 13, 2016, 08:19:15 AM »
I've mentioned this before on a couple of other sites, but it bears mentioning here as well.

I am a surviver of bubonic plague contracted (apparently) from a flea bite. The location is unimportant, because the plague is everywhere, especially in prairie dogs and ground squirrel territories. Luckily for me, I was already on an antibiotic for a bladder infection. Nonetheless, I did have the well know symptom of black fingers—hence the name black plague! I ended up with no lasting effects, but I did have to take ciprofloxacin for several weeks.

Besides the plague, diseases like Rocky Mountain Spotted fever, Tularemia, and several others are very prevalent especially in varmint-class animals. And most are transmittable to humans.

The bottom line is, be very careful handling game, use gloves, and be cautious. And if you find yourself feeling badly after a hunting trip, see your doctor as soon as you can. The life you save may be your own.

Thanks for the post, Alan.  I am glad you were able to overcome the plague.

"But the deviant side of me really wants to see pics of your fingers when they were black". Purely for educational curiosity.   ;)

I never took any pictures, but the ones on-line are typical albeit mine never got anywhere near as severe. Under the nails, my flesh was a dark gray color, similar to those of a corpse. As I said, I was lucky enough to already be on an antibiotic. Had I not, I shudder to think!

I'm still glad you weren't affected worse than what you were.
