Library
« on: January 03, 2022, 03:09:06 PM »
This may be a bad subject to bring up, but here goes anyway. Would it be possible for the forum to have a Library for the members use?
I guess some members sell manuals or instructional info and this may cut into their business. Several years ago I was a member of a forum that had hundreds of listings that you could read or download for your personal use. Some members even added their own build stories, and helpful hints on how to DIY projects. I don't remember what the forum was.

I'm sure Steve will pipe in about this, as I don't personally know if a library could be set up.

If I'm proud of anything here on the Guild, it is the willingness of members to share their knowledge. If there's something else you need, lets us know.

I don't need anything at this time, thank you. I just like to review what others have built or repaired or look for information for an off the wall air gun I may find at an auction or yard sale.

I tried a library on my Tolman Skiff forum, where folks could list the boat building books they owned, and folks could check them out.  No many folks participated.

Then folks started sharing outboard engine manuals and repair and set up manuals, and a copy of “how to build your own boat trailer” in pdf form. The book had no identifying information and I figured it was ok to post.

Well it was up for years and during that time the page placed number one for the search term. One day I got a cease and desist letter. The company who wrote the book and sold it, said it was theirs. Boy was I embarrassed.

So yeah a library is cool but I sure don’t want anymore cease and desist letters.

Steve,
You are right about those letters.
I offered everyone on the GTA a PDF copy of the “HW35 Book”.
The moderators received a nasty letter from the author and he told to stop the offer.
Now, when I see someone has acquired an HW35, I get their address and send it to them direct…

BTW…I didn’t  buy the book.
I downloaded it from the internet..

Well maybe we could have an IR forum, (information request), or MHM forum, (members helping members). Members would post a request for information they need, another member that has that info and wants to share it could PM the requester with the info. No sale or buy info. Once the request is answered the post should be deleted.
Sharing information and helping other members makes a good strong forum.
Thanks for Listening.

Basically, that is what we have now. The various sub forums may be utilized for any question, save for the classified, et. al. Speaking of which...

The basic set up was done before I became involved. One aspect of that (you can't see it currently) was the Mall. This was set up for the original owner to sell product, but it never got off the ground so to speak. Adding that Mall, was a real project and was accomplished with a lot of due diligence from our webmaster, Steve. For him (if I can speak for him), it would be deja vu all over again.

We already do this. Most of the Airgun forums are like this. I think it pretty much sums up what the early internet was.

We get a certain amount of traffic through internet searches, and we’ve taken extra pains to make to forum easier to index and search.  So, deleting threads is actually counter to that.

The Mall was quite a project indeed. I never liked the user interface for users or admins. Hmmm come to think of it I paid for a one year license with support. Hmmm

I suppose I could flip it back on and noodle around with it, but it would probably still annoy me.

Hey Guys thanks for the past history. I or any member could use this forum as it is and ask for information. Thanks again.
