NOE Version of the 257420 BT HP - Plus Shortened FB Version
« on: September 27, 2019, 04:49:59 PM »
Now in the NOE Store.... RG2 and RG4 versions only, in brass or aluminum....

http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/index.php?cPath=26_603

This bullet is as close as I could draw it to the dimensions I took from the original (steel mould) Lyman 257420, with the following changes:

1. I used a boattail base, starting at the same diameter as the front of the gas check stub, and tapered like the Arsenal version....

2. I changed the lube groove center section to a smooth cylinder, just small enough to miss the lands (ie 0.248"), like my BBTs….

3. The overall length was reduced 0.005" to make it fit one of the mags. mentioned during the development threads, which everyone had lots of opportunity to view and comment in....

https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=150246.

http://noebulletmolds.com/smf/index.php/topic,2676.0.html

4. Most importantly, Al used the new thin RG pins so that all cavities are HP, but there are optional pins to cast a flat nose or cup point.... There are no HP moulds available for any 257420 version anywhere else, that I am aware of, without sending the mould out to have them added at extra expense....  Are these bullets identical to the 257420?.... No.... They are a 257420 BT HP design, and hopefully the changes made will increase the BC....

NOTE: Al has also made a shortened version available, with the boattail removed.... (like removing the gas check shank on a 257420)….

http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/index.php?cPath=26_604

This is also made in the RG2 and RG4 moulds, and is 63 gr. as a FN and 60 gr. as a HP....

I'm not a doubter of expansion of hollow points, but I'd like to see what happens to them when shot into water (like the forensic guys do).

I have some frangible, 9 mm ammo which looks like sintered copper. The fill material isn't describable. Shot into clay (≈900 fps), almost nothing is left of them. Shot into water, and only the rim of the hollow point is disturbed. Of course, at a faster velocity, things would be different I'm sure.

To me at least, this exemplifies why terminal ballistics are so variable—one man's garbage is another man's treasure.

Ah! Water jug. It is sort of like the old parlor trick, where you break a yardstick by placing a newspaper sheet over one end. How about water without the plastic? The point is, each media we often try, in an effort to duplicate terminal ballistic properties, has a different plasticity.

I recently watched a YouTube video where the guy shot his Texan into a chunk of roast, and then into two watermelons. That really doesn't match real-world results, any more than clay or ballistic gel—all it gives us is an approximation.

If you'r'e interested, I have a copy of Gunshot Wounds, by Vincent Di Maio, I'll be happy to loan you. It is not for the faint of heart, as it has a myriad of photos of actual gun shot wounds in humans. The book has convinced me, that terminal ballistics are an unexacting science, which often gives us unexplained results, which are never as exacting as we think they are! Or should be, for that matter!

Well, I didn't do the test.... but IF the guy used a plastic milk container, they are pretty thin, and might represent the hide of something like a Marmot, which is pretty tough.... In any case, I'm impressed with the expansion in two quite different mediums.... Once I cast some up (over the winter) I will test them in my soap, so at least I will have a comparison with other bullets I have tested in the same medium....

Shooting a slug into water, to recover the bullets, is used by Forensics Labs to do the least amount of damage possible, to examine the bullet to match it to something recovered at a crime scene.... Expansion is the last thing they want....

True!

However, all said and done, wouldn't it be nice if we could assure that a specific slug or pellet did the most damage it could. As I have alluded to, that is guesswork!

My offer to mail that book to you, still stands if you're interested.

Well, I’ve been hankering for a new, not sold in any store .257 bullet for my two .257 rifles and most definitely Hollowpoints. And here you go,  Bob designs and finally Noe delivers. I’m still unemployed but I had a few bucks in my paypal account, and since I’ve been working hard doing unpaid work for a startup and tearing down a retaining wall, and shuttling kids to and from school, I treated myself.

It’ll be here tomorrow or Tuesday and I will work in a casting session when I’m sick and tired of try to dig and pull out retaining wall 6x6 post concrete footings.

Oh the joy! Fingers crossed my 1:14 barrels like this boat tail. :)

Thank you Bob-3!

I was wondering when that would happen. Speaking of casting, I fired up the pot this morning for the first time in a long while. One thing I did different was use my new hot plate to heat up the mold and also I stayed in the recommended temperature range between 700 and 800. Nicest bullets I've ever casted. It was surprising how low I had to keep turning the temp adjustment...I was  around #3 and #4 the majority of the time on my Lee pot.

The Noe 258-75-FN Molds got here today! They are as always purty, shiny and precise.

Gonna try to cast tomorrow.

I cast my first bullets from the new mould. Not the best casting I’ve done. I started casting in the cool shade and had wrinkles. As the sun warmed up the bullets improved.

A hot plate will be added to my casting kit.
