Is there a Best Speed for different Pellets?
« on: February 11, 2016, 07:55:29 PM »
Hi All,
All this tuning is great but if we exceed the capabilities of the ammo we are using, the accuracy will suffer.  So I'm reaching out to the experienced folks here.  Is there a Chart or rule of thumb, for Diablo Pellets?  My .25 likes JSB 25.4 that's all I've fed it, but what is the "Best Speed "  or is there one?  Same goes for the balance of my arsenal.

Thanks for sharing.

A "best" speed, not necessarily, and if there is, it will vary with the pellet.... Generally wadcutters work best below about 600-650 fps, whereas round-nosed pellets are good into the 900s.... There is a definite disadvantage to driving any pellet, or bullet for that matter, too fast.... There are three broad speed ranges, Subsonic (under Mach 0.8 ~ 900 fps), Transonic (Mach 0.8-1.2 ~ 900-1350 fps) and Supersonic (over Mach 1.2 ~ 1350 fps).... In the transonic range, the drag increases by a large factor, pellets have about 5 times the Drag Coefficient Supersonic than they do Subsonic.... A typical drag curve looks like this....

That is for the G1 model, often used for bullets.... In fact pellets have even higher drag above the speed of sound.... This is one of the main reasons pellets are shot at less than about 1000 fps.... I try and stay in the mid 900s with good quality, high BC, round nose pellets, as going above that actually increases the wind drift significantly.... The wind drift roughly follows the above curve.... In addition, many pellets tend to have their best accuracy around 900 fps, so that is where you will generally find a sweet spot.... However, every pellet is different, as is every barrel, so you really have to find what works the best for you....

Almost all Diablo pellets work well between 880-930 FPS and above that range is questionable but in that range your almost guaranteed  good results.
