Anyone use Hatsan Vortex Strike Pellets?
« on: August 13, 2021, 07:30:25 AM »
I needed ammo for my Benjamin Bulldog and could not find any JSB’s, but I did find Hatsan Vortex Strike pellets in .35. Price was right, but I’m wondering if anyone is using these things?

I ordered from Amazon well aware that Amazon couldn’t pack a box if their life depended on it. I knew I’d have to put up with a certain amount of damage. Looks like the dents in the tins was about it. Knock on wood.

Looking in the tins I find tons of dirty bits of lead shavings. Hmmm. Also the skirts are a bit ragged.

Until I can find the bullet molds I’m looking for or JSB sends out more pellets, this is it.

Just curious,  Have you seen these?
https://www.ebay.com/itm/164994641984?_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20160908105057%26meid%3Dbca553f24ea34a29b87989f8e2c866c3%26pid%3D100675%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D184907051014%26itm%3D164994641984%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2380057%26brand%3DUnbranded%2FGeneric&_trksid=p2380057.c100675.m4236&_trkparms=pageci%3Ad034474b-fc67-11eb-bc1d-f6697a4b04b2%7Cparentrq%3A40dd194a17b0a7b0833ee2d2ffd46e76%7Ciid%3A1

I have a sample he sent along with some cast slugs I had bought from him.  They look better than the Vortex pellets.  I never rememberd to shoot these out of my Bulldog.  Kept forgetting to bring them along!

I actually have some of his slugs and pellets. The quality is severely lacking. I got a batch of slugs that were so wrinkled and with voids they went into my melt box. He sent me replacements but they were terrible also.

Maybe the picture is distorted but the skirts look banged up.

Skirts are all messed up. Lot of trash in these tins. I'll clean them, and lube, then give them a go.

This is one of the reasons I switched brands of slugs from FX (whoever makes them), to NSA slugs—just too much chaff or chad as the case may be. The question remains, how do you "clean" them, without distorting them?

There is another issue, I brought up (alluded to perhaps) during the discussion about indexing pellets. The skirt and head outside diameter could be very close from pellet to pellet. But even if they were, the variation in skirt symmetry would negate any effort in "indexing" them for accuracy purposes. Put another way, the methodology of making slugs, tends to be much more precise than those used to make pellets. As Bob mentioned, pellets can indeed be very accurate, the percentage of fliers notwithstanding. And I should add, I have never experienced what I would call a flier, while shooting slugs at targets. If I miss hitting the mark, it is assuredly me, not the slug!

Steveoh,

do you have any info on who makes the Vortex pellets?  Like the tin stating "Made in" or "Manufactured by"?

I'm trying to edit a .22 pellet BC table and there are quite a few pellets in the Vortex lineup.

Thanks. 😊

Vortex is a trademark of Hatsan, and personally, I haven't a clue who actually makes them. They have an 800 number you might call.

vortex pellets look like someone trying to learn to cast and no idea how to. then once cast chucking them across the room one at a time to land in a metal bucket

You may be very well correct. My shooting body has tried them is three different rifles, and they turned out to be shotguns!

I have not. I think I was going to order some during their move, but never got back to it. I have a bunch of JSBs now, and my PC home cast pellets. Also on a list for a group buy HP slug mold at CastBoolits, but holy hell that’s dragging on.

One look at the photo of the pellets in the tin, enlarged by clicking on it.... was enough to make me shudder....  :(

This is probably not the time...

The type of dross shown in the photo, in one of the reasons I switched over to NSA slugs. It seemed to me, everyone else was having issues with swaging. I haven't tried the Javelins, and I probably won't. After all, you don't fix something that isn't broke!
