Flex .25
« on: August 24, 2018, 08:06:39 PM »

I just received my new Flex .25 with a 25" 1-18" twist slug gun.  Looked her over, installed the pistol grip and Magpul stock.  Couldn't resist and mounted the scope and had to test shoot in the garage into the rubber mulch trap.  Wow, some recoil as the regulator was set @ 2900 psi.  Shot and reduced the output to 1700 psi and she still recoils!  I shot the Bob"s boat tail cast 41 and 51 grain stuff.  Mine cast @ 40.9. and 50.8 avg for 10 boolits.  Very short range so anything other than 1 hole isn't good with my shaky hands shooting off  bipod.  I did shoot resized to 0.250" and 0.249".  Need to get out and see which shoots better and get some chronograph numbers.

I suspect 1,700 PSI is a bit low. I have a Cobra in .25 caliber (pellets only), and mine is set at 1,850 PSI. Using 25.39 grain JSBs, I get 880 FPS, which is right at 45 FPE. See up this way, I get about 50 shots (4,500 down to 2,000) depending on the temperature. And, it shoots under 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards at the indoor range.

A 100-yard indoor range!  That would be so nice, especially in the depth of winter!

OP - Congratulations on your fine new rifle!

I received my new to me flex .25 a few weeks ago but haven't had much time to play with it. I agree it does have some recoil. Mine was shooting JSB 25.39 at 970 and at 50 yards it was dead on and hit with major authority. But at longer ranges it was unpredictable, so I called Jim and he said to back it down to 890-900ish and try it. Reg is set right at 2000, maybe a tick over and Jim said to leave it alone. Hopefully today I will get to try it at 100 yards.
Regardless, these are some well crafted air rifles!

When I got my Air Ranger it was tuned for the same power...but would only produce about 20 shots within 3%ES.  So I backed it down to a nudge over 40fpe, now getting 60 shots, and I'm sure would get a lot more if I would let loose of a dollar and install a reg.   When I reduced the power it also dropped the power curve to start at 2500psi, so it's a lot easier to shoot when the tank gets a little low.

I would like to move it up to shooting about 880fps, but I need a hammer spacer and just haven't ordered the delrin rod to make one.

My Cobra is hardly new, as it has had over 15,000 rounds shot through it, and it has NEVER been cleaned! Just this morning, I pumped through 30 shots. For me (or to me as the case may be), the Cobra is a tool for minimizing pigeon and collared dove populations out at the ranch. Since January 1st of this year, I've only missed about 10 hunting days, mainly due to HEAVY rain.

Regular dove season starts on September 1st, so I won't have to be as careful to ID the doves before I pull the trigger.

Yup they make some power for sure !!
Have the little brother ( Warp ) set up with a 20" choked pellet barrel, regulated at @ 1900 psi it throws JSB 25.4's @ 945 FPS at a tad over 50 ft lbs.  Wicked air rifle indeed !

Forgot to mention that my Flex has a Cothran valve and not the War valve.  Valve and barrel choice were Jim's recommendations.  I do need a chronograph session but the weather here (Honolulu) sucks.

Thats WORTH mentioning for sure  ::)

I also have an JSAR SS balanced valve that works best unregulated or above 2500 psi and it with the same set up makes @ 70 ft lbs but sadly is just not velocity stable enough fill to refill for my wants / use.
So I run the WAR valve ( Cobra modified ) with an internal SSG devise with great stability and shot count.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  Amazed at the variations everyone has.
Truly Flex able.
I will post chronograph numbers when I finally have them.

I see Dennis Baker has a nice left-hand Flex for sale. I would only have to sell half my airgun collection...

I did a quick chronograph session.  The average fps is 950 shooting Bob's boat tail 41 grain bullet that weigh an average of 40.9 grains.  The 51 grain averages 50.8 grain and had an average fps of 900.  The JSB Heavy MK II pellets ripped along at 1000 fps avg!  I got about 20 shots from 4000 psi down to 2600 psi and I was still on the regulator when I stopped.  No accuracy data since I'm shooting at home at 10 yards isn't going to tell anything.

Will be following! I also have the little brother WARP with all the Cobra goodies. .22 and .30 with 16.1" barrels. Absolutely love the gun. Set it up for squirrel hunting in spring in the .22 and anything within 100yds was mine. The .30 I've shot 2 5 shot groups at 100yds and both were barely over an inch. Had it tuned previously at 810fps with the 44gr but recently bumped it up to 860fps for 28 shots with only 10fps ES. Love these guns! Talked to Jim last week and plan on ordering a 20" 1:18 .25 barrel to shoot NSAs 39gr slugs.

I sat down to do a quick test of differently sized cast boolits I have on hand.  .  Anything sized @ 0.249" doesn't group.  Sized to .250" group gets better.  AS cast the groups look good.  I need to get out and shoot further to confirm.  This is the 1-18" twist barrel with choke.

Did you ask for a choked barrel? Or is that just what Jim did?
