Interesting writeup. And it is also interesting about the valve slamming shut. A similar bleed technique is used in balanced sprinkler valves to prevent hammering (just a different name for the same problem).

Balanced valves will become more popular, that I have no doubt. And I also feel more work is yet to be done on electronic valves as well. Some day, someone will incorporate a piezo-electric valve, and we'll all be in further awe.

Yes, the seat pounding is indeed not to be overlooked or ignored. Unlike a sprinkler valve driven my Hydraulics our AG valves are Pneumatic with no fluid to damp the contact.  Where I could see & understand not wanting or needing a FAST closing cycle in a sprinkler valve ... WE DO !!! being it goes hand in hand with reducing dwell.
