25 cal with WAR valve leaking air
« on: August 29, 2016, 03:29:45 PM »
I've been working on my Marauder for a while, dialing in my DIY SSG and modified hammer. I've had the breach off the gun a million times but haven't had the valve out or air tube dismantled since I put the WAR valve in a year and a half ago. Today, I was going to run some strings and noticed the gun was only at about 1500lbs, well below where I left it. I filled it up and noticed that after hitting 3100 (tank gauge) and shutting off the air flow, it leaked down quickly to below 3k. This 'settling' is somewhat typical, but upon reflow to 3100, it will usually stay put. I got done shooting and left the gun at 2100. Two hours later, it was at 1500. I called Travis at WAR for some advice (thanks Travis for the quick call back) and he suggested checking the guage, and the area around fill nipple etc. I did that with soapy water but I don't see any evidence of leaking. I cannot 'hear' air leaking from anywhere but obviously it is.

I don't know if this is related or not, but last week, when I was messing with my F.A.M.E. mod, it was shooting fine, then after one shot, I could hear all the air leak out. I took it apart and deduced that the F.A.M.E. washer was riding up on the front end of the air tube slot and got 'stuck' there, against the valve. I smoothed that entire area out and have not had that problem since.

Any ideas on where I should start?

Tear the valve apart and clean it up I would say that the valve stem is alittle off center. I had this problem and fixed it up nicely.

Thx Dairyboy.  Any tips on how to do that?  I haven't delved into valve disassembly as of yet.  :)

I wouldn't go that far right out of the bat. Valve seal could be bad or the Gauge Block Seal on either side. Simple fix without breaking down that valve right out of the gate.

Matt if it were the air gauge seal it would only come out the gauge hole and it would bubble or he could hear it so it is either the gauge or gauge seal or the valve seal I would think.  So spray the back side of the gauge at the weep hole especially if it is Mrod gauge.  If it were the seal on the valve it would all leak down if it were the poppit he should hear it coming out of the barrel muzzle.   My 2 cents

Might be the fill adapter.  Take off the fill adapter, take it apart, clean well and lube lightly.  Then put back together with some teflon tape.

Check your o-rings, too.

Problem solved.  Thanks for all the suggestions and help.  The only place I found 'bubbles' forming was out of the front left breech screw hole when I put soapy water in there.  I took everything apart, dismantled the valve to clean everything, put on new o-rings and put it all back together.  It appears to be holding. Once again, thanks Travis and Dairyboy for helping me with the valve dis-assembly.

I've chased down a couple slow leaks on my guns.  Sometimes the only way I could find them (really slow) was to fill the sink with water and submerged the end of the airtube.  (just the airtube)  Leaks I could not find with the soapy water test.
