At $399.99 per year for 3rd party hosting I think I'm done with Photobucket.

Yes, if they continue with such a ridiculous idea, my account there will sit in limbo, in order to punish them by taking up their disc space.... I won't add to it, but all the pics, charts and graphs I have already posted in threads on various Forums will go blank.... I will also stop paying the $30 a year I do currently because I was over their free storage limit.... something I was doing so that I could continue sharing my knowledge and projects....

I have all the graphs and charts on my own computer, but it would take, literally, hundreds of hours to move them to a new service and change the links.... so that is NOT going to happen.... I feel sorry for the impact that will have on my threads, but I simply don't have the time to move them.... In addition, some Forums block any editing after 1/2 hour, so I couldn't change the links, even if I wanted to....

I got a renewal email from PB today, telling me that my CC had expired (which I knew, they have no way to change that on their website).... They told me to delete my recurring payments and set up a new one.... My guess is that my plan no longer exists.... or once I renew (and they have my $29.95/yr) THEN they will tell me I need to pay $399/yr.... So, I sent them a reply asking them if my plan will still give me the same service I have now.... I will let you know what/if they reply....

I have had a paid account for many years, and after finally hearing from PB I decided to renew it for a year and see what happens.... My cost was $34.99/yr with a $5 discount to entice me back.... I'm hoping they will leave all existing contracts in place, but I guess I'll find out.... They didn't answer my question about that one way or the other....

Yeah it sucks to go on some of the threads or other forums and the images are down saying the account needs to be updated >:( Lots of good info lost. Cause you know, I'm one of those guys that like pictures.    :)

Hey Dairyboy, good to hear from ya. Hope all is well.

May have to give them a try.  Any costs or are they free?  How much storage will they allow?

Excuse me while I kabits for a moment.

Photobucket hosts about 10 billion images. Assuming the average upload is 2 mb per photo (about medium resolution there days), the storage space used would be 20 billion megabytes! That is 20 followed by 15 zeros! or 20,000,000,000,000,000! That is a rather large number of terabyte-sized hard drives! This seems like a big number, but Google's storage space makes Photobucket's look really small!

Google has over 900,000 severs! It is estimated that their total storage capability will exceed a zettabyte in the near future. With the help of Wikipedia, that is to say: 1 ZB = 1,0007bytes = 1021bytes = 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000bytes = 1,000exabytes = 1millionpetabytes = 1billionterabytes = 1trilliongigabytes.

So ask yourself this question: Who is paying for all of this? Yep! You and I! Complain as you wish about their cost structure, but the real truth lies elsewhere.

Here is my suggestion, and I have voiced it previously. Instead of paying Photobucket, send a donation to the Guild so they can afford to continue native hosting of our photos!

Every chance I get I attack Photobucket for screwing us all over. So many images have disappeared on the web. It's uncool. They were already making money from ads that show when you click on an image. I hope this comes back around and gets the CEO fired.  May the fleas of a thousand camels infest the CEO's armpits.

Yeah I'm cranky in the morning when I haven't had enough coffee.

Seems like they could have left the old pics alone and not allow future 3rd party linking.

It's a no brainer to add an ad to the bottom of each of the original images. They get their advertising dollars and don't screw over everyone, who in good faith used PhotoPhucket to host their images, and to post on third party forums, blogs etc. Yes, it costs them money to serve up those images, but the cost is easily offset by putting a small ad. I get the feeling they just want press, whether or not it is good or negative.
