Paradise, California Fire
« on: November 12, 2018, 11:43:26 AM »
25-30 miles east of Chico.
It was an absolute paradise.
One of members, golddregger, who made those beautiful stocks for the Marauder, and his family, live there.
Jason, shot a couple matches with us in Ione with the Sacramento Field Target Club.
I have not been able to reach him.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to those who lived in Paradise.
I say lived, because the city is gone.

We've been driving and camping down the coast for the past ten days, getting as far south as Ft Bragg. Within half a day of the Paradise fire starting we were covered with high altitude smoke. By the next day it was like sitting beside a campfire, a thick smokey smell, though we were something over 150 miles from it. Utterly horrifying watching the reports coming in (Carson beach campsite has excellent WiFi), then as we started north again nearing of the number of victims. Seems easily the most scary year for fires in a century. We had a bad summer up in BC but thankfully no cities lost. Paradise looks like a war zone.

North of Mendocino. Actually camped at Westport RV campgrounds, I guess, looking at the map, though it said Carson's on the sign. Drove down after staying a couple of days to see the glass beach at Ft Bragg. Ugly from the path, but once down on the left side of the parking lot we found a couple of beaches practically made of smooth glass pieces. Fun for our boy to spend hours collecting colourful things in a small bottle. Been driving and camping at state parks as we progress back North, currently sitting by a campfire (in a steel ring) at South Beach State Park next to Newport, Oregon. Bandon was very nice. Carson was nicest though. Oh, and we had a heated yurt at Brookings CA, with a lovely beach and pretty sunset. November's a nice time to be on the coast. Wet in Vancouver, but nicer down here. A bit cooler than last November, but then we went to Southern California and drove North from Anaheim so I guess a very different climate up to SF. Sure will be neat if they ever get that high speed train going down the coast.

No signs of fire around southern Oregon except one logging site by 101 where a huge pile of slash was making a lot of smoke. Surprised me that they were allowed to burn logging slash with the fire risk so obvious, but a roadside sign actually stated the risk was low near there so what the heck do I know...

The train will only run from San Jose to Santa Barbara.
Two hour check-in and then a bus ride to Los Angeles.
Then you can rent a car if you do not get mugged at the bus station (they are never in the better part of town, are they?).

I can drive faster..

Been Smokey here in Santa Rosa since the fire started. Super smokey today. Hunted Delevan on Saturday and no smoke there at all, on the way home I didn't get back to smoke till I started up the Cotati grade.

I have friends around Paradise, just shipped a couple pairs of beef there last spring. Big ranch as they go here in California. Haven't heard from them, they'll get in touch when things are settled down I imagine.

Bob, Fort Bragg was a logging town on the coast, I was born there. My Grampa and Dad logged in the Jackson Forest many moons ago. Redwoods galore. Mills are gone, all has changed, kinda a tourist trap now. Oh, it was nothing to go down in the rocks and pick 9-10 inch abalone on a decent tide when I was a kid. Those days are gone too sadly.
Buncha BB guns that I don't get to shoot as much as I like. Grinding out a living on the farm.

So many folks suffering in Paradise and surrounding areas.

Here it's filthy air again. Was getting better, but today the air is thick with soot and smoke. Lot of Folks have sore throats, headaches, burning eyes, and asthma symptoms breathing this air. All I say is pray for rain.

Wish we could send you some of our rain. Had a few centimetres the other night, and it continues with light rain off and on each day. But wishful thinking gets nothing done. Seems the winds have at least died down for the moment around Paradise which is a small blessing.

Speaking of the fires....!

I can't find out if the t. Shasta fire is close to Travis Whitney's location (OldPro)? Does anyone know?

Alan,
I have been to Travis’s house and while it is on the fringe of the national forest and he does have some nice trees on his property, he is in town right off of I-5. I am sure he is fine..
