FYI: Santa Rosa is on fire
« on: October 09, 2017, 09:58:48 AM »
North part of town is ablaze. The big mountain property I used to hunt is gone. It's a mess here. We're fine, but many businesses and homes are gone. Freeway is closed, not enough fire crews to handle all the fires.

Buncha BB guns that I don't get to shoot as much as I like.

One of the wineries which went up in smoke, was visited by our next door neighbor. We just looked at the photos yesterday, the day after she got back. Too bad.

Still a mess here. 0% containment they are saying, as they are focusing on saving lives and diverting flames. The Hilton is still smoldering as they never even brought an Engine up to fight it.
~1500 structures burned.
My houses in town are safe so far. My home here is pretty much in the clear.
Homeowners insurance is sure to go up again.

Thats just crazy! I was in the Lake Hughes fire and it was nuts!! I watched a possum on fire jump out of a tree a run while on fire under a house that was later destroyed and wonder if the possum caught it on fire. I actually have video of it somewhere.

Being here at ground zero cannot be described. I've evacuated my family twice (my house is ok, but my father's house and family dairy farm is in danger) and the list is growing of friends and clients who's homes are gone. The owner of the local sporting goods/dive shop lost his home in the Coffey neighborhood. Hell of a week...I thought that Tom Petty dying was bad. Las Vegas shooting, wildfire, 49ers suck...it just doesn't quit.

We had over 1,000,000 Hectares of forest destroyed here in BC this summer, the closest fire was only 10 km. from us.... We were very fortunate in that we only had smoke to deal with for about 10 days total, and that wasn't bad or all at one time.... The biggest problem was that there was an ATV ban in the backcountry for the whole southern half of the Province, which caused a lot of our guests to cancel....

Good luck to all those affected.... Stay Safe !!!

I'm in the Bennett Valley area and have had the bags packed in the car for three days but not evacuated yet.  The evac orders came last night just down the road from us and I had a hose on the roof but still waiting it out with one eye open at night and fingers crossed.  Wife is going nuts and ready to run but I'm trying to keep her calm.

I think they will have a good fire break in place at the base of the mountain and lots of resources available if it does come down.  At least they will have hydrants to pull from.  The winds seem to have calmed for now but I would like to see some tankers in the air around here.  Stay safe everyone.

Shifty, go on "Nextdoor" if you want to see what the local residents are saying. BVFD is still ok over by Sonoma Mtn Rd.. Helis are flying over grabbing water heading back to Bennet Mtn..
My Wife is packed too, my daughter is a ball of nerves worrying about the new house we just bought with her. I threw my M24 and 870 in the truck with a bunch of fodder for them and a backpack with cash that cant be replaced. Oh, and a sack of chow for Oprah ;D. I'm still one hill over from BV, but a big easterly could change things.
It's a sad state of affairs out here for sure. Vaya con Dios

Caniborrow, funny you mention nextdoor.  That's what I use for all my info as it comes in fast and is usually pretty reliable.  Trying to keep the wife off facebook as she gets a lot of bad 4th hand info there.

The fire crews made their stand yesterday evening and it was glorious!  The had made a massive break at the bottom of the hill.  As I was on my roof setting up a sprinkler, we saw a huge plume of smoke and massive flames shoot up near the base of the hill and everyone panicked the wife was in tears grabbing my daughters to get in the car and flee.

Turns out the fire crews had everything in place and conditions were perfect for a back fire.  When they lit it off that was the massive burn we saw and it worked.  Within a few minutes and 3 helicopters dumping water the hill was just smoldering ashes and Bennett Valley homes were saved.  Kudos to all the crews and the hard work and planning they do!
