TJ Hammer forged barrels .... Yup there Snug in the choke !
« on: February 05, 2016, 03:36:21 PM »
Having picked one up a couple months ago as a take off from a rifle getting parted out that would not sell all tricked out .... Got the barrel after a Tin or so worth of shooting.
At first barrel was simply not very accurate and was quite disappointed contacting both Travis who said contact Jim  ::)  So after a bit of talk and much closer inspection found the bore at choke badly lead fouled.  Some WD-40 and brass brush scrubbing extensively finally cleared out the fouling.

So myself shooting now @ 400 or so JSB's waxed with Finishline KRYTEK, was only able to shoot maybe 60-80 shots and barrel again would be fouling at choke  :P  While for a hunting rig acceptable enough couple fills worth of hunting duty it was NOT satisfactory for a serious workout of 100's between cleanings required when in the Belding Ground Squirrel fields of Northern California where 100 shots an hour is not uncommon.

So ... Obviously DRY WAX is not cutting it  :P :P and with a good cleaning of barrel decided to follow Jims suggestion of a WET LUBE on pellets.
Mixing @ 8 ounces of White gas ( Naptha works too ) with @ 1/2 ounce of synthetic 2 stroke oil washed a few tins of pellets.  Pellets get stripped of factory "Whatever lube ? " and retain a thin film of oil once dried.  * The @ 8 ounces of mix could quite likely coat many 1000's of pellets, but contaminates with the factory lube being removed. ( Turns a VERY milky white ) So a prewash with straight first likely the better way.

Wala ..... now can go what looks like 200+ shots without a POA shift.  A simple couple passes with a Bore snake and we're rockin along once again !

Barrel is STELLAR accurate so long as clean and fouling free, but the tight choke you have to be aware of and adjust lubing and cleaning regiment accordingly !!

just my findings ...

I was curious of this as well as I've used krytex and like it better pellet wise being dry but would like to try to extend my 80-100 shots before leading. So forgive me but I'm confused on if you saying cleaning pellets first makes them milky white or if not cleaning and then the mixture turns milky white. Curious what is meant by a prewash with straight means. Sorry I'm new to lubing pellets and want to be sure.

Using straight NO OIL white gas to remove the factory lube first, Then wash in the oil mix to film the pellets.
When doing oil mix right off the bat, it go's milky from the removed factory lube contaminating your oil mix wash.

So preclean with straight first  ;)

.22 Mrod I've had for 4-5 months but just got a hammer forged barrel not long ago. I did pick up caniborrowsomeammos .25 mrod recently though which will be my last for quite some time.

I'm going to try this on a tin of pellets. Since this was a TJ barrel was it a bullet shooter? I made try it on some of my .308 bullets.

Here's the .25 and I do love it. Totally different animal compared to the .22. It's capable of just above 92 fpe but I have it set at 8 shots at 80 fpe 2.1% ES with 47 gr Nielsen swaged slugs. Shoots super accurate and will work perfect for coyotes around the dairy while being quiet during the night/early morning.

The .22 isn't a bullet shooter just a pellet shooter but it will work on the bullets. I use krytex on my .25 which has a TJ .25acp liner and I plan on trying it as well on my slugs.

Had to post this for anyone looking into one of these hammer forged barrels. Best 5 shot group I've ever had beyond 10yds (same hole with this barrel) AA 18gr shot at 50yds. .214 CTC on 5 shots. I've never even had that at 25yds before. Shot from prone with bipod.

Well i got on an actual range last Tuesday and able to relly see how well the TJ .22 HF barrel shot.

At 30 yards ... 10 shots looked like a single .25 cal hole.
At 50 yards ... 10 shots easily inside a dime and sub MOA
At 75 & 100 yards ...  wind that darn wind opened up the groups side to side so no real definitive data collected.

This with JSB Exact 15.9's running right at @ 900 fps with an Oil lube on them.
Ground squirrel seasons around the corner and we're good to go !!  Minuet of squirrel head accurate  ;D

* But as detected earlier, as barrel fouls groups open up needing a few Bore Snake pull threws.
Tho with oil lube now can get close to 100 shots between cleanings.
