Humans are short sighted and ultimately not as smart as we think we are.

There was a thread at GTA about using helium and I warned about this. It isn't a renewable resource.

Plus you have to do to much to it to get it up to pressure.  Not even worth it and more important for the health care industry.

Heard it all before, and I agree that at present it seems to be non-renewable.... When they stop selling it to fill party balloons, I will be concerned....

Excuse me! This is yet another scare tactic by the greenies! Helium is a by product of natural gas production, and under the state of Wyoming (un tapped I might add) are about 10 trillion cubic feet of the stuff. Fact is, we ship about 200 million cubic feet of helium to Japan each year. The fed reserve is measured in billions of cubic feet, and contrary to popular press, is growing.

You know as an airgun propellant I wondered about helium.  Its such a small molecule (yes I know helium is an element) in its free state I would imagine that leakage would be a much larger problem than "air".  I know it can be contained and it has been used, but seepage or leakage would have to be more.

Helium permeability is greater than air.... Cheap ol' buna N O-rings are among the best for it.... and it is NOT an issue....

Helium is not a byproduct of natural gas extraction.  It is a byproduct of radioactive decay. It accumulates in deposits of natural gas though, that is true. My point is though that it has taken millions of years to accumulate what we have...releasing it for party balloons is not a wise use for it.  The federal government use to stockpile it and has since decided to cease that practice. They've flooded the market trying to liquidate their supplies driving down the price.  The problem is though that it creates an artificial sense of supply. Once it's gone...it's gone.  No more. Unless you hang out around our nuclear waste stockpiles for a few million years we won't experience the joys of helium on earth ever again except through spectroscopes looking at the sun (a giant fusion reactor).

You are correct Fritz, but it is collected (separated actually) from natural gas. Texas is the largest producer, with Oklahoma, and Kansas a bit behind.
