Awesome day shooting with Kevin
« on: September 03, 2018, 07:34:23 PM »
It was another awesome day shooting AirGuns with Kevin. Met a little after 8 on the dairy farm, and found Kevin wrangling cows. :) He was to sweet talk them into going over yonder hill where the grass was said to be greener. Funny thing it all looked golden brown, but I don’t know squat about dairy farms, other than the cows leave bits of poop everywhere.

While Kevin was setting up targets downfield, I set up a sawhorse with four two liter sodas on top, my orange bucket stuffed with rubber mulch, and my GoPro on a tripod.

Got my Super Duper Born Wild Shooting Chair set up, sawhorse with LeadSled (didn’t use), and dragged out my collection of big bore lead slinging devices.

Brought my sedate Marauder also and decided it was first up today. Kevin set up his Airforce Texan .308.

We had targets at 50, 100, 200 and 300 yards. I pretty much stuck to the 50 and 100 yard, targets. Kevin will have to correct me on exact distances.

Shot the Marauder a bunch and was pleased with it’s performance.

Up next was the Sam Yang 909s without scope. Yep ironsights! Banged a bunch of steel and was getting a full 7 shots per charge. It was a hoot.  It loves roundballs and EPP-UGs.

Finally dragged out the artillery, the .575 Quackenbush LA Outlaw. Started out with roundballs and eventually turned to the giant 330gn short fat squatty bullet. I’d had little luck with it before, but today it was pretty good. I have to say that thing makes the DAQ kick like a mule. Was rubbing my shoulder after a while. Sorry to say I beat up on Kevin’s metal targets.

I fired a few shots with the .458 DAQ before the fill nipple stopped holding air. Put it away but came back to it while Kevin repainted Targets.

Found the barrel band loose, and the fill nipple tight. Luckily I had the tools. Got the fill nipple off and found black Teflon tape fragments inside. Cleaned that up and restored and reassembled. Hooked it up to the tank and the nipple still leaked. So I held the rifle barrel down and smacked the nipple area with my fist while opening the valve quickly. That did the trick but then the valve wouldn’t close. Cocked the DAQ, opened tank and smacked the valve area and that worked. Back to business!

To be continued...

Fun day. A little embarrassed that I couldn't hit the 2 liter soda bottle at 320 yards. It was like it had a force field around it as dust kicked up low/high/left/right. Finally I gave up after around 25 shots as anything that hit was just going to be a lucky shot. To make matter worse I took about a half dozen shots at another at 200 and didn't hit that one either! lol  Humbling hobby.

I messed with my scope setting for the first time in a while and I went up 80 clicks  :o which zeroed me at 200. That was cool because for the first time I could zoom in my scope to max power. That did help to tighten my grouping a bit. While I wasn't a big proponent of FFP scopes I can see some advantages that they can provide after using Steve's on his Marauder. Speaking of Steve's Marauder, what a nice shooting gun. After shooting a ragged hole at 50 yards I pushed it to 150 and even bucking the wind I was on the target with every shot.

Always fun and always learn something new.

The reason there's so much cow dung is that a) there are cows in there, and b) the poo-poo trucks have already done their spreading in that field in preparation for the rainy season. Being raised on a dairy I never notice it. I can roll in cow manure and then eat a sandwich but a baby diaper with drive me to my knees.

At 320 yards I was hard pressed to hit your big target. But I know I hit it at least three times. Bottle? Nope, nope, nope.

Cow Dung? You mean the stuff coating my fender wells from our last and now our latest shoot? Stuff is like concrete once it drys. :)

I came home yesterday, and my wife asks, what on earth is that smell? And to think she grew up on horse farms.  :o

After fixing the DAQ  .458 I had a blast trying out all the new bullets I cast. I think the 405 grain bullet will be a devastating round on anything living. But I also think the 340 grain might be the sweet spot with power and accuracy. Need to do a lot more testing. Finally narrowing down a round for hunting. The lighter rounds will do best at 3,000 psi and perhaps a bit lower. Then I think I'll be able to coax 3 full shots and maybe 4. Like the .58 DAQs the heavier bullets really kick hard. I'm a little sore this morning after having shot the big boys so much. I am happy with these beasts.

I brought 8 - 2 liter bottles of soda, and it was a blast shooting those things. I have at least two shots on video, and will post as soon as I can cut out the good bits. I ended up with one sawhorse, one tripod, and one GoPro camera liberally coated in sugar water. Oh, and the blown up bottles attracted  a lot of YellowJackets. I have a HATE/HATE relationship with those buggers. Got stung 11 times last summer before I finally found their hive. The bites got worse and worse until Kaiser said I should carry and Epi Pen.  oh joy.

So, next time will not be bringing bottles of soda to shoot. Gallon jugs of water work for me. Yep.

It was a relaxing shoot, and made me super happy. As always Kevin is awesome and comes with great targets.  Such a great day. :)

Gotta get me an arc or wire welder so I can contribute some new targets since the .58 Quackenbush breaks stuff. :)
