Just throwing this out there .... because I've got to get my post count up before I am eligible.

The rules state one guess per member.  Also - there is the request that a donation be made.
It probably wouldn't help much .. but possibly a little.

What if more than one guess was allowed per member, but with a stipulation.
1st guess - donation is requested
Additional guesses - $10 per guess, or if that doesn't generate activity maybe $5.

A lot of folks will drop $20 on lotto tickets without batting an eye - the chances of winning here are better than probably any lotto you could find.

-Whew!  1 post down.  24 to go.

I'm no rocket scientist, but ...... if I've done my math correctly there are only 13 guesses that qualify so far.

1 in 13 chance to win.

Probably not cool to change the rules of a contest that's already going on so .. I'll pose a hypothetical
New contest  - we're in the same boat.   Durn nice prize with only 20 guesses in.  My chance of winning is 1 in 10.

Rules allow additional guesses at the carnival price of $10 a pop.  I drop another $10 down and enter another guess.
For that $10 my chances of winning are now 2 in 20.  The probability of my winning has just doubled.

And that's $10 less out of the sponsor's pocket.  Making it lighter on his pocket book likely increases the odds he'll sponsor another give-air-way.

Yeah - 2 posts.  I'm rackin' 'em up!! ;D

I'd love to do that, but there are fed and state rules about on line contests. There will be another one coming a bit later in the year. But keep going, the contest doesn't end until April 15. Go ahead an enter a guess, and I'll keep track of it. If you win, and have enough posts, you'll qualify.

In most places a totally 100% free raffle where making a purchase or contribution has ZERO - ZIP - NADA - NULL affect on your chances of winning its legal.  Where tickets must be purchased, or a purchase or donation changes your odds than it is a lottery.  ie: Gambling.  Many places gambling is licensed or even illegal on any game of chance.  A raffle or a lottery is a game of chance.  If its not a game of chance, but it was billed as one then it would open the operators up to potential contest fraud charges.  Many jurisdictions will allow a raffle and sometimes other forms of gambling for a properly filed 501C3 non profit corporation that has been in existence and operating for five years or more.

Now you might try to argue that the raffle is operating in a state where it is legal.  (Maybe its not.)  The problem is its being offered to all qualified members of the forum and it must be legal in all jurisdiction where its being offered.  I am sure some shade tree attorney is going to argue with me.  Even if you changed my mind it wouldn't change the law.  HOG, Rotary, ABATE, Rod & Gun, etc.   I've been down this road with various organizations.  We have real attorneys as members of all of those organizations who have chased that bear for us.

Even if one argued that its a personal wager it might still not be legal everywhere the raffle is being offered.  Some states may not allow personal wagers and may still bust private card games if they find out about them.  But then there is the burden of meeting the standard of a personal wager in all jurisdictions where a personal wager might be legal.  Just because we all agree its a personal wager doesn't make it so.  Its organized gambling to benefit this forum which is supplemental to a business.  It just doesn't work.

Keep it a free raffle.  Run it honestly.  Some donations may come in, and some new members may join.  Keep It Simple and Keep It Legal.

I'll wait until I've got enough posts before I make any guesses.  I might accidentally pick a number that someone who is already eligible wanted - and it'd turn out to be the winner.  Wouldn't that be a fine howdy-do?  Brand  new to the forum and I'd already have someone unhappy with me.
I was already trying to push activities that could get folks in trouble.  :o

I never considered that, yet it's pretty obvious now that you've mentioned it.
That's one of the reasons these forums are so cool.  I'm always learning things.   :)

The ONLY stipulation is the number of posts, and not being a member of the immediate family—i.e.: moderators.

The whole idea was and is, to increase viewership. It has done that marginally. And yes, there have been a few donations to help defer the cost of hosting the site.

YEAH!  Well, if I had two more guesses I'd guess 59.99 and 60.01 just to mess with you.  Sadly I already used my guess in the middle of the pack.  LOL.
