5 Shots in a Dime Challenge
« on: May 07, 2016, 09:00:21 AM »
I have proposed this challenge on a couple of other Forums, but very few have accepted it, and fewer still managed to accomplish it.... It isn't my idea, it came from a Rimfire Forum, where somebody got tired of always hearing "I can put 5 shots in a dime all day at 50 yards" and said "prove it!".... Only a very few managed it with a .22LR, and the challenge is even more difficult with an airgun.... Here is the target.... EDITED FOR CLARITY: The target is to be shot outdoors....

Print if out on 8.5 x 11 paper (I recommend 65 lb.) and shoot 25 shots at it at 50 yards (or more).... Shoot 5 shots at each target, 25 shots total, PERIOD, no sighters (use another, separate target card if you need those).... POI doesn't matter, and in fact I would sight in my gun so that the group is just below each target so it doesn't ruin the POA.... The challenge is to be able to cover each 5-shot group completely with a dime.... and to do that 5 times on one piece of paper, with no other holes in the paper, and nothing sitting on the paper to possibly cover anything up.... You can draw a circle with a pen or pencil around your dime to prove that it covers the group, and then photograph or scan the target and post your results....

This is a very simple challenge in concept.... but not easy to do.... The group size, C-T-C when you are using a .22 cal is 1 MOA or less.... While a .177 group that fits under a dime would be just over 1 MOA, and a .25 cal just under, that should make up for the lighter calibers being slightly more affected by the wind, so I think it is fair for everyone.... doesn't matter anyway, it's my rules.... *LOL*.... Participation is completely on the Honour System, so please make sure you are shooting at 50 yards or more if you accept this challenge.... There is a link to a .pdf file below you can download and print from should you choose.... If you print full size from that file, the diagonal measurement of the black squares is the same size as a dime.... GOOD LUCK !!!!

Bob

PS, here is a list of those who have successfully completed this challenge.... I will list the rifle, caliber, and position/bags/rest/vice if I have that information.... CONGRATULATIONS TO THEM !!!

Was trying to get these inbetween some serious gusts. Gave up casue I couldn't feel my hands no more..

Yes, I remember not very long ago when Clifford gave me the honor of purchasing his .25 Brod............. first thing I did was mount scope, zero and check grouping, didn't like it, chrony time, adjusted for speed, re zeroed, shot 6 round group, and well, CTC 0.258 at 50Yds. I could not complain. Now, to attempt to do that on all five targets!!!! Gonna have to work on my shaking a bit!

Well if one is using a PCP, are they allowed to tether or refill after each shot?  I know some guys PCP's have been setup with limited shot count.  I myself say just go for it, but then I'm not much of a paper puncher.

That is a very good question indeed. Although I have more than 500cc, I am set up for POWER. This may need to be addressed Bob. Considering most Mrod .25 guys struggle to maintain 16 shots in the same group without a bottle.

There is no restriction on tethering, refilling after every shot, etc.etc.... It isn't the intention to place a restriction on the gun, sights, gas used (air, Nitrogen, Helium, CO2) or the ammo for that matter, pellets or bullets are both allowed.... After all, a guy shooting a rimfire has a whole box of ammo sitting there.... and they didn't find this challenge easy.... Drag out any airgun you like and have a go....  ;)
