Compressor Explosion
« on: September 20, 2017, 12:33:32 PM »
No idea of the make or model, or what caused the failure.... but this HPA compressor failed big time....

Anyone recognize the type?....

Just look how thin that metal is.  Hope nobody got hurt not supposed to be pressure in that area.  That is what that breather is for in top.  looks like only 1 cylinder, not like my Air Venturi for sure.

My guess was a sudden leak that pressurized the crankcase.... Perhaps the piston cracked, or maybe a ring failure?.... I suppose the vent could have been plugged?.... If you fill the oil through that vent, I suppose it's possible it was leaking and the user found some creative way to plug the vent to stop the leak, causing the pressure buildup....  ::)

Chinese EBay compressor. I'd guess the case vent was plugged. I can understand why though the one I tried spewed oil fumes out like crazy

The breather is just like mine and that red piece comes out So maybe it is plugged. Or too much oil

Actually that red piece was screwed into the crankcase when new and no oil and the black breather was in a sack so I' guessing that the oil was put in and the breather was stopped up and no place for the piston to back breathe. and boom.  Looks like everything in one piston too an 2 or three stage.

Bob, How's your AirVenturi compressor holding up? Any idea how many hours you have on it?

The compressor is great only had one little glitch in that I thought it was running a little hot and I got to talking to Jordan at PA/VA and he said they were getting some water pump were wired backwards.  Sure enough mine was and was of course pumping backwards and slow.  He sent me another and it didn't work at all then another and it was backwards So I rewired and seems to be better.  Other than that it is great I estimate only 25 or 30  plus hours.  I personal think those pumps are to small to run on 24 V even if is built for that.  I am gonna, for my piece of mind, put a double fan radiator on it and I have another pump coming that I think will do the job.  we'll see.

Hi Bob,
I tried to look closer at the vent plug in the picture but it looks like a plug.  We used to get this all the time with the single acting dump trailers, they would not install the breather, it would go up slow because it was pulling a vacuum in the reservoir.  But when they hit lower they would blow the reservoir of the power unit!  1 to 2 gallons of Oil EVERYWHERE!  Never saw it happen but saw a bunch of elongated reservoirs, with the bolt tabs broke off!

Apparently the compressor filled a tank to about 1000 psi, and then the pressure stopped increasing and BOOM!.... First time he used it is the story....

Here you go, all $383 dollars of it:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Electric-PCP-Air-Compressor-for-Airgun-Paintball-Refilling-High-Pressure-300Bar-/152707808208?epid=17002950926&hash=item238e183bd0:g:2P8AAOSwq9tZlVyK

This is one of many which come from China, and sold by arbitrage resellers all over ebay! The import pricing from Alibaba in 10 lots, is under $200US including shipping. If you look for other photos on this unit, you'll see a red tag attached to the vent. That tag warns the user about the possibility of failure if things aren't assembled correctly. Problem is, it is in Chinese!

All this brings up a related subject—safety! Some folks just have to go cheap, and you can clearly see the results! Well sir, this is one facet of air gunning where it doesn't pay to do so! Any gas, compressed to 300+ bar, is going to be a bomb waiting to go off in the hands of the uneducated. I'm surprised we haven't seen more of this in the news.

I have an Omega compressor. If you're a fellow Guild member, and you pass through Roswell, NM, I'll fill your portable tank as a courtesy.

Like I have always said and always will there is a MAJOR difference between CHEAP and inexpensive.  There is a guy on Ebay taking Make an offer bid and some are going for less than $200 what is wrong.

That thing at the bottom y'all are calling a plug is an oil level sight glass, not a vent. I don't see a breather.

The breather is the tall black plastic pipe on top of the crank case the site glass is on the bottom facing out BTW if overfill the oil will squirt out the top of the breather.
