L.A.S.S.O. Gathering in California 2020
« on: April 15, 2019, 09:52:27 AM »
Happy Monday morning dreaming.

Yep, I'm still a working stiff, and can't help but think about stuff as my development machine is updating.

L.A.S.S.O. - I am trying to come up with some ideas on how to get such an event happening here on the  West Coast. California - that is. Just back from the 2019 Pacific Airgun Expo, I have a lot of ideas about how to host such an event, and combine it with a fun airgun shoot like L.A.S.S.O.. Of course a another set up for small bore airguns would be a given also, as I'd want to be inclusive as opposed to exclusive.

I would think this would be an awesome thing for the AirgunGuild to sponsor.

Vendors: Most certainly vendors would be invited. I bet Nick Nielsen would show up with a table loaded with his ammo, and since he's now a Alkin Compressor vendor, maybe, Alkin could be convinced to help sponsor the event and provide a Gas Powered Compressor to fill up everyone's tanks?

Perhaps Airtanks https://airtanksplus.com/ would show up and demonstrate their StickMan, StickBoy and other products, and maybe just maybe show up with a bunch of tanks all filled and ready to go.

I would think the big boy stores like Pyramyd, and Airgun Depot would be interested, as well as the big bore manufacturers and big bore cottage industry. Airforce, Umarex, Wicked Air Rifles, QuackenBush, XP Airguns, PBBA, Scandalous, Airhog, Hunters Supply, etc. Ya'll can add to the list.

I'm going to chat with Eric Henderson, and invite him here to give some tips and pointers on how to host such an event.

Of course finding a place that has the safe distances we need, and can support a good number of folks will be key. Prolly need a porta-potty and hand wash station.

Vendors for coffee, drinks and other food stuff perhaps.

And I'd like to invite California Fish and Game folks to come witness big bore airguns, and give them a chance to shoot a variety of rifles also. I know I have a few they can try out.

Ideas? Thoughts? I want to connect folks, and meet folks, and have fun, and spread the news about airguns of all calibers.

I think the 4H Club does the concession stand at the Texas Airgun show. You may contact the local 4H shooting club to see if they would like to do it.

You know I'm in. I'm not lobbying for a local location (the important part is getting as many people as possible to attend), but since it's what I know I will keep my ears and eyes open. Some factors to be considered are:

Easy access to the range. That means parking both cars and pickups very close to the shooting area.
Easy access to the targets. Hilly terrain would be a deterrent for some who may not be as mobile.
A perfect location would have the range, the vendor/show section, and a place to eat. This can of course be a dining establishment or a mobile caterer.

One person at the Pacific show brought up the possibility of using an Indian casino and adjacent property. I hadn't thought of that, but it might be worth exploring. The Graton Rancheria and associated casino has a massive hotel and casino in Rohnert Park. The own a very large piece of land next to the casino which extends for about a 3/8 to a half mile (I'm estimating here) to the next road. Something like that might be advantageous for both convenience, lodging, dining, available space, and possible exemptions from local ordinances making it easier to host a shooting event.

I can also check with some of the local hunting clubs that have high end deer 'camps'. These camps more closely resemble local lodge halls and can accommodate big numbers of people with easy access.

Please note that I don't know what else is available outside of my area, but here is a scenario that comes to mind that should be workable:

Have the shooting event at Circle S range which is about 15 minutes outside of Petaluma. The awards dinner following could be done at a couple  of different locations...the Penngrove Social Fireman Hall (about 25 minutes from the range) or the Portuguese Hall (about 15 minutes form the range and on the same route)  I could help with both of those. The dining hall/awards dinner is the easy part; I have resources there. There MAY be an outside chance that the shoot itself could be hosted by a local property owner. The insurance coverage is probably the biggest factor and that would have to be investigated.

I'm willing to do my part. I'm also willing to travel to SoCal to an event. It seems that there are a lot big bore shooters there so I'm fine with travelling.

If it were down in So Cal I would be interested for sure.  This Expo was fun and I met people I wanted to meet (even Kevin) but from a financial aspect it was no bueno.  Not to say I would not go the Expo again but if it were hosted in the same place as this year I would only attend if I had time and would not have expectations of financial returns.  An event held in a populated area that is within reason for travel I would make time for.

Not because I am here but So Cal has a lot of shooters and would draw a much larger crowd.  Not sure where it could be held that you could also shoot but but a show where there is a large population is sensible.

This is the kind of feedback that Michael McKeown should get. I know he's been doing this for a while, but I think he needs help on ideas for making the show have better attendance of vendors and folks with cash in hand.

Steve,

This was brought up at the after party by Mike. We had a discussion about it and the bottom line is that we need to put butts in the seats/through the doors. It's unreasonable to expect folks to travel long distances when it's a mostly mom & pop affair. Not that there's anything wrong with that; the small venue thing is nice in it's own way, but it's hard to justify a full day (or more) of travel plus expenses for such a small show.

Mike did a great job promoting and organizing the event. It's a lot of work as anyone who has put something like this together knows. But it's in Placerville; you can't get around that. I had thought that the Sacramento area folks would have had a better turnout, but I was surprised at how many folks came from further out (San Jose, etc.)

Nick's point though is well taken; there are way more active big bore shooters in SoCal then there are in NorCal. There's no doubt that the turnout would be much higher and for everyone involved that's a good thing. The hard part is that if the folks that are setting up the event live outside of that area, it makes it difficult to do. I stand by what I said though, I will do what I can to help in any way possible to make it happen.

This was my experience at last years Texas airgun show. We got up early (Saturday) to travel 218 miles (3 1/2 hours) to get there early. I spend less than an hour in the actual show and maybe another hour out on the range shooting things like the Hammer. We had nothing to do the rest of the day. I stayed there because I had another friend coming but he didn't get there until late and we were bored. Sunday was the FT match and that's where we had the most fun. So if you can have both the show and meet on the same day that would be great IMHO.

My 2 cents worth.

This is highly informative, and sounds like experiences I've had over the years.

I know that hosting something like this is an enormous amount of work, and a giant time commitment. I understand Michael's struggles, and others who set out on an endeavor of an Expo, or LASSO event. My eyes are wide open!

I'm trying to get an ok from Eric Henderson on using the L.A.S.S.O. name and rules. Not sure he approves, but I'll keep on talking.

So after the discussion at the Expo and the discussion here, it seems that the attendance potential would be much better in SoCal than NorCal. The issue currently at hand is that the current organizer and/or potential organizers live in NorCal.
I think everyone agrees that strong attendance is the big motivator. Without that its a moot point. Trying to set something up when not familiar with or living close to the area would be a nightmare. So the next question is would someone or someone's step up and try to make something happen. There are more airgun affiliated companies in that area (and in Arizona) that might have resources that could be useful. Any thoughts?

Good points Kevin. It would be incredibly difficult for me to work on a project in the southern part of the state.

Not sure I have the time to put into an event planning of this magnitude.  I could assist if someone wants to take the reigns but I don't want to over commit myself as I already run two companies which is a lot of work in itself.

Understood. I'm glad we are talking about it though. Now if we could get a few more interested folks chiming in.
