Oh Limpy, how I’ll miss you.

Oh Limpy, how I’ll miss you.

Ding donger woke me up, blink, blink, blink. Closed my eyes and thought, go away. Blink, blink, blink.
Ok I’ll come out and play. Dragged my flu riddled body out of bed, grabbed Sumatra with X-Sight and squeaked out the back door. Shhhhhh. You’ll scare Limpy! For a brief moment I thought of saying Dave’s not here man,  but I had only myself to entertain. Still, I admit I giggled.

Stopped at the tripod and found the Sumatra did not fit so well with the new bipod attached. Did I mention that the sky is clear, the moon is bright and I’m casting a shadow past midnight?

Moved to the chair and sawhorse, and no Limpy. I’m thinking he’s gone, having heard me stumbling around cursing at the imaginary Dave, and giggling. But I unfold the bipod legs, (squeak!) sit down, peer through the ATN and wait. Dude, Dave’s here! I mean, Limpy’s here! I reach for the video button and mash it. I think video’s recording as Limpy moves into view under the red light. I aim, and Limpy limps back on his limb of safety. Then he’s back under the light, and back on the limb, dangit, now he’s on the roof. I take aim at his pointed head, and squeeze! The hammer WHACK wakes a couple of Limpy’s dead relatives and puts Limpy to sleep. He lands below and does a short dance.

I turn off the X-sight, but not before noticing video is not running. Whaaaa I mutter in disbelief.

Park the Sumatra in the back door, grab my headlight and stick it on my semi-addled head, head out the door to the feed station. But before I get there SKUNK! Runs across my path 5 feet away. I froze, and it headed to a spot under the stairs. I take the risk and climb the stairs a couple feet away from skunk and go another five feet to find Limpy, no longer limping.

Turn him over and I see entrance wound to the neck. No exit wound is apparent.  Flip him over in his back and look at his gimpy leg. Yup that’s bone sticking out. No doubt I hit him in the leg at our last encounter and shattered the bone. He must have been in bad pain. I feel bad about causing suffering.

Limpy is a good 14+ inches, and in spite of having a broken leg for a couple weeks, he’s fat and healthy looking.

Arlo crapped out and quit the video right before Limpy expired.

Sorry for the pain Limpy!

I have to say that as I become increasingly competent with the X-Sight, I become more enamored of it. Yeah, it has it's issues. But everything is always a compromise.  Where the X-Sight excels is in pitch black night. The section of yard where the rats are is lit with an infrared flood light, as well as the infrared light that the Arlos project when they are activated. I can SEE everything. Previously when the feed stations are lit only with the red led light, I see only what is under or near that light. It's very easy for the rodents to move out of sight in the shadows. No more. I control the night.

Great story and lead up...well told. Move over Ted Trueblood, Patrick F. McManus, and Ed Zern (am I dating myself?) we have a Field & Stream-worthy writer in our midst. Way to nut up when you're sick and finish the job you started.

We need to talk on Saturday about night hunting. My brother has a dairy here and while not infested, there are inevitably rats around due the easy feed. I've been seriously considering a setup for my Armada (may as well use all of that rail for something) to do some nighttime ratting. Maybe you can recommend something and help me avoid pitfalls or unreasonable expectations.

Steelhead, if you're REALLY that old, then you should remember Bill Fithian, a field editor of 1950's F&S fame and fortune? I do, because he was a close friend of my father's, and the man who gave me my first bicycle! Yes I am that old!

Naw...I'm not that old. As the last age group (I'm 48) before computers, cell phones, cable TV, etc. and growing up in the country I read a lot. All I did was fish (ponds all over the ranch), hunt, and read. My mother got me a subscription to Field & Stream and every month I waited for that delivery. Stories of glorious hunts, fishing trips, adventures, and humorous fiction. Fond memories of those famous authors.

I'm sorry if I overlooked it. What are you using to film with? Is that a trail camera? If so, what make and model? I've got to get a batch of new cameras for the farm.

I use Arlo Pro surveillance cameras. They have their own built in Infrared Lights, but this area has an Infrared Flood I use.

The X-Sight scope has video but I accidentally pushed the button in and then off and missed getting the shot recorded.

Ok. That could actually be an option for me. If I can figure out how to daisy chain my wi-fi across the farm, I don't see why I couldn't set up surveillance cameras and control them from my home computer.

Well I have a Range extender that works great.  Works with 5G as well I believe.  If not look for that feature.
D-Link  Wireless AC1200 Dual Band Gigabit Range Extender,  it has a wall wart that makes 12volts, so you could run it off a 12 volt Emergency exit light battery, and charge that with an Solar Panel, for barn instaltion.  Also has 4 Cat 5 ports you could run a 100 foot cat5 cable to your camera's from there.  Found it on ebay for $20 at Xmas time.

Good Luck
