Good Shooting Alan!

I might have to start baiting pigeons, as the rats have disappeared. I haven't seen a single one on the cameras in two weeks now. Bah.

Nice shot!  Well, unless it was eating out of your hand at the time.....  ;D

Actually - that wouldn't matter... anytime you let the air out of a pigeon it qualifies as a nice shot.
If you give them a lobotomy, like you did, it's a great shot!

Never cared much for pigeons to begin with, but for the last month and a half when I've washed my car they hey have bombed it by the following day. >:(

I try my best NOT to brag about distance, wind doping, and similar things. One reason why, is simply the fact we all get lucky once in a while. In this case, the distance was just under 85 yards, and the wind was directly towards me about about 10 mph. I was using the top of the rail fence as a rest, and I took my time as the pigeon what sitting still.

Most of my pigeon kills are under 50 yards, and usually no further than 35 yards. A camo Count Dracula cape helps if the wind isn't blowing too hard. I occasionally use a ghullie suit, but in the summer they're just darn too hot!

While we're on the subject of pigeons... Pigeons are really smart critters. They can recognize faces, and they certainly recognize my vehicles as they fly as soon as I drive in to the ranch driveway. One of their failings is their color vision. They do have some color vision, but very bright colors (neon orange, greens, and yellows), confuse them. When I wear my bright neon Tees, I can some times walk within 10 feet of them before the fly away. Knowing these things, makes it easier to shoot them. So far this year, I've killed about 200 or so. Yet, they keep coming back. And remember too, they carry coccidiosis, and some strains of the disease can be transmitted to humans. Thus careful handling is given.

As a kid, for the short time I lived in South Carolina, I learned to appreciate the pigeon. My buddies and I shot them with our AirGuns, cleaned them and cooked them up on the spot. I didn’t realize it at the time, but David and Mark came from an extremely poor family. What they killed always ended up on the table, or in the iron skillet they’d haul with them to the woods.

I can’t help but see pigeons and think of those two guys. I know Mark has passed on and I think David has too.

Head shot on a pigeon at 85 yards is pretty darn good in my book. Certainly worthy of bragging rights if you want them.  ;)

That is very interesting on the colors they have trouble with.  New  coveralls for work are entirely Hi-viz yellow - maybe they aren't as gosh-awful ugly as I thought....  ;D

Actually, I want to come up there. My wife is aching to get to Denver, to see the grandchild (one of 11!).

Joe, we have a few doctor appointments to get past, and it looks like the last week in the month. It won't be a hunting trip, but I still might bring my Cobra just for the fun of it. We'll see, and if nothing else, we'll have lunch someplace.
