.25 caliber pellets for larger critters like raccoons?
« on: August 26, 2016, 06:08:14 AM »
I've got a Flex on order and one of the first victims will be several itinerant families of raccoons that need to be evicted...permanently.

Having no experience with this sort of thing...what pellets should I be trying out?

Some of the raccoons are 20+ pounders. They look bigger when they're standing up on the deck rail hissing at you...The extreme range would be 75 yards but could be as close as 25 yards. Or point freakin' blank if they come up on my God D***d deck again!

My neighbor's dog...a big beautiful collie got hold of one and I ended up 9 ironing the little beast. The collie was tore up more than a little bit. He would have killed it on his own but it would have been ugly. He's a really smart dog. As soon as I got there he backed up and I chipped hard for the green...again and again and again. I must have gotten a triple bogey on that one...worth it.

Yup. Those raccoons will tear a dog up. Got a friend who coon hunts with Blueticks. One night his dogs surrounded a big one on the ground. He called them off except his biggest dog. Said watch this. The dog continuously circled the coon with the coon turning to face the dog. Pretty soon the coon tired and the dog got past 90% of the coon facing him. Then the dog ran in and snapped the coons neck. I asked him how did he train his dog to do that. He said he didn't it was just the dogs instinct. I was amazed.

My 1st choice. My Flex off sand bags shoot these 1.62" ctc for 5 shots. Surely with practice it would get even better.

For hunting with my .25 marauder I like the 31gr H&N Grizzlies or the 34gr JSB King heavies.

I do get slightly better long range groups with the JSB's, but the Grizzlies seem to get better penetration at longer ranges.

But it does all depend on what pellet your barrel likes.

I had to dispatch a rabid racoon that got into it with my dog.  It was about 2 weeks after I got my .30 Flex.  That is what I used.  1 JSB to the head is all it took.  That was from about 15 yards.  I put a couple more in the body just to be sure.

I don't think I'd hesitate taking a body shot with a Polymag on one of them there devastating pellets. Head shots I would use a JSB pellet as polymags and bone don't do too well. Weight shouldn't matter too much the 25gr kings would do the job plenty of people use .22s on raccoons.

I use JBS Kings (25.39 grains). A headshot is curtains, and most of the time, a lung shot.

I have an Omega compressor. If you're a fellow Guild member, and you pass through Roswell, NM, I'll fill your portable tank as a courtesy.

This is terrific! I was worried that the Flex .25 may not have enough a** to do the job. Some people don't understand how destructive these little beasts are. They're not anything like Disney cartoon charachters. Since they are mostly nocturnal...and so am I of late, I'm thinking the ATN scope will really help.
