Potential Improvements to the Airgun Guild
« on: September 01, 2017, 01:31:51 PM »
I've been chewing on making a few improvements to the forum to make it easier to:

1. navigate
2. help with engagement

Stuff Done:

A month or so ago I added the YouTube Mod which makes it infinitely easier to add YouTube videos. Or at least I think it's easier.

Have increased file sizes allowed for images.

Stuff to chew on.

1. Add alternative dropdown navigation to the site so you can change to a different board from most any page. I'm wondering about building out a dropdown like the GTA has or similar.

2. Adding Karma or Like Buttons on each post.  GTA just added Like Buttons. We could fiddle around and make Like = Flipping Awesome, Cool!, Yay!, Love, etc.

Thoughts?

Anything else you'd like to see?

Any problems?

I tried Karma like/dislike type system years ago on a boat building forum. And you are right. It became a popularity contest. And I would constantly get messages that someone was being mean and disliking everything they said.

Like I said... Things to chew on.

Thanks for reminding me about that...   :-[

Forget the ratings, emoticons, and other stuff for users to comment on. If you do, you'll end up like one of the more popular sites where they've zookeed the manga!

I've been a member at forum.xda-developers.com for about 8 years, and of the buttons there the only ones I've used are the 'thanks' and 'donate' buttons. I like having that one there for at least a token expression of positivity towards volunteer developers who endlessly tweak and perfect operating system updates and other gifts. I've even made the odd PayPal donation when I feel a software developer (usually a university student) has put in huge numbers of hours and I've benefited from the results of their hard work and late nights. Buying the guy a beer, so to speak. Like and Dislike don't seem nearly so positive as the above. An 'unthank' button would be silly.

Hate the like buttons. And how fortunate are we to have steven here a guy who really cares about our sport and it shows.

It's funny. The Like buttons over at the GTA are annoying me to no end...

Scratch that idea!

Allow me to add something. I get really miffed when someone tells me I'm stealing his thread! Well if that person thinks so, perhaps he/she should step back a few paces and think again.

We are all here to learn from one another. Sometimes, a specific question may spark an adjacent idea which may appear to be off topic. This occurs because too many folks do not process spacial vision capabilities, better known as narrow mindedness! So if there is an emoticon or dislike button, their first instinct is to push it, as they rant their frustration towards your theft!

If you want to see an example of how it should be done, look at the responses from our very own Doctor Bob. Not only does he answer the questions, he mentions what is going to happen if you don't follow his advice, even if you didn't ask for it! This is exactly how knowledge should be shared. We should all welcome these types of responses, not chastise them like too many other airgun-related sites allow their users to do!

As my personal motto states; Set the example... Don't be one!
