knurling bbt 51g
« on: December 31, 2016, 12:49:57 PM »
I read about doing this somewhere on a forum, just  cant remember where. I tried it today,  and it definitely tightened my group. For me, if I can shoot an inch at 100 yards with an air rifle, I'm a happy man. I shot several groups today and when I got back home, for the life of me I cannot find the target in my truck. So mandatory pictures will have to wait till next weekend. But here is what it looks like after rolling between two medium files.

In the old days you could buy a roller knurler ,  but I have not seen one in ages perhaps some one at NOE would make one for all cal.. I used to have one for 38 slugs but I can't find it in all the stuff I have around. Can you say hoarder!!. You lay a bullet on 2 rollers and put pressure on a third and turn a crank. Not a big piece of tooling but it worked.

Interesting. I have loaded a many store bought cast wadcutters in PB's and never thought about it affecting bullet performance. Just thought it was to help hold the lube.

Saw one tonight on the Corbin site. Thinking about getting one.  It looks like the one your talking about cpt. Six shooter, give it a try on your next 200 yard shot. Never know, it might make a difference. Cost me 16$ for two files.

I got so many files laying around the shop. May make a knurler and give it a try.

Corbin , always nice stuff but always pricy. My thought was if you could make a consistent knurl you would be more accurate? the one I had was a lyman I THINK. Not sure, I will have to dig around. It holds the lube better but as I recall and could increase dia..

I saw the one on the corbin site. 180$ :o I'm ordering a hyskore shooting rest hoping it will be in next weekend. Ill shoot using the rest, a group of weighed and sorted at 100 yards and then a group weighed and sorted and knurled at 100 yards and post the groups. The shooting rest should remove some of my human error and maybe give an more correct indication of what, if any difference it will make.

After shooting many groups with the 51 g bbt, two things are apparent. My barrel is 1-18 twist, not the ideal twist rate for the bbt, as it was designed I believe for a 1-14 twist. The knurling allows me to shoot 1 inch 100 yard groups fairly consistent. However, I really do not shoot this much over 65 yards and at 50 yards I can stick them under a dime,.. nickel size very consistently. I'm pushing these between 90-100 ft lbs so for a 50-65 yards its a hammer.  The picture below... measures 1.1 inch ctc at the longest point. Two in the top hole for 5 shots total.
