I wonder
« on: September 14, 2017, 05:17:41 AM »
Hard Air Magazine reviewed the RWS Superdome 14.5 grain, .22 caliber pellets, replete with photos. http://hardairmagazine.com/reviews/rws-superdome-14-5-grain-22-caliber-pellet-test-review/

While looking at the photo of the pellet, one quickly realizes the imperfections in the surface, which are qualified by the included chart. The chart show a ±12% variation in weight and length, yet they called these pellets, at 4¢ each, "premium" quality! I don't think so!

Makes me wonder how good pellets COULD be if we were willing to pay more of each pellet? Personally, I'd gladly pay several times this much if I could get variations down to say ±2%. And don't you wish they could control the variations as close as jacket bullets are controller nowadays? Geez! This is the 21st Century, after all.

Our expectations are elevated a lot with the advent of PCPs.... When everyone shot springers, the shooter and the platform were the biggest limits, IMO.... Now that we have airguns that are capable of MOA accuracy if we do our part.... it is natural to want all the pieces of the equation to step up to the plate....

You are right, however, that the cost would be much greater.... so be careful what you wish for....  ::)

The Chinese are making the Qiang Yuan .177's. They are said to be pretty good. Though I haven't tried them. If they see a market for "quality" pellets who knows, they might just start making other calibers and styles.???
Buncha BB guns that I don't get to shoot as much as I like.

UMAREX was to come out with an all-copper pellet called HALOX. I placed an order for them, but that was cancelled once it became apparent that UMAREX was having manufacturing issues. Digressing...

Once upon a time, when I was really gung ho about varmint hunting, and had the perfect prairie dog town to hunt in, I hunted almost every weekend I could get away. A typical day's hunt expended some 1,500 rounds, about equally divided between a 22-250AI and a .22 HornetAI. I sure wasn't worried about the cost per shot, that's for sure! The point being, if I could buy pellets with as good of a consistency as Nosler maintains in the varmint bullets, I'd pay the price even if they were 15¢ each! As it is, even with JBS MkIIs, I still get way too many nutating and errant pellets to suit me.

Curious...what do the high end competitors/Olympians use? Are they brand specific? I would imagine that the individuals inspect and/or weigh each pellet to be used prior to competing.

There is "target" ammo made.... all of them wadcutters.... and packed in special trays where they ever touch each other.... H&N and JSB both offer them.... JSB Offer the 7.8 gr. Express and 8.4 gr. Exact RN pellets in their "Premium" series in similar "one by one" packaging, with pellets weighed within 0.001 grams (0.015 gr.)....
